In Memory of Sigmund Freud

When there are so many we shall have to mourn,when grief has been made so public, and exposedto the critique of a whole epochthe frailty of our conscience and anguish, of whom shall we speak? For every day they dieamong us, those who were doing us some good,who knew it was never enough buthoped to improve a little by living. Such was this doctor: still at eighty he wishedto think of our life from whose unrulinessso many plausible young futureswith threats or flattery ask obedience, but his wish was denied him: he closed his eyesupon that last picture, common to us all,of problems like relatives gatheredpuzzled and jealous about our dying. For about him till the very end were stillthose he had studied, the fauna of the night,and shades that still waited to enterthe bright circle of his recognition turned elsewhere with their disappointment as hewas taken away from his life interestto go back to the earth in London,an important Jew who died in exile. Only Hate was happy, hoping to augmenthis practice now, and his dingy clientelewho think they can be cured by killingand covering the garden with ashes. They are still alive, but in a world he changedsimply by looking back with no false regrets;all he did was to rememberlike the old and be honest like children. But he wishes us more than this. To be freeis often to be lonely. He would unitethe unequal moieties fracturedby our own well-meaning sense of justice, would restore to the larger the wit and willthe smaller possesses but can only usefor arid disputes, would give back tothe son the mother's richness of feeling: but he would have us remember most of allto be enthusiastic over the night,not only for the sense of wonderit alone has to offer, but also because it needs our love. With large sad eyesits delectable creatures look up and begus dumbly to ask them to follow:they are exiles who long for the future that lives in our power, they too would rejoiceif allowed to serve enlightenment like him,even to bear our cry of 'Judas',as he did and all must bear who serve it. Big Hair

 Ithaca, October 1993: Jorie went on a lingerie
tear, wanting to look like a moll
in a Chandler novel. Dinner, consisting of three parts gin 
and one part lime juice cordial, was a prelude to her hair.
There are, she said, poems that can be written 
only when the poet is clad in black underwear. 

But that's Jorie for you. Always cracking wise, always where
the action is, the lights, and the sexy lingerie. 
Poems, she said, were meant to be written 
on the run, like ladders on the stockings of a gun moll 
at a bar. Jorie had to introduce the other poet with the fabulous hair
that night. She'd have preferred to work out at the gym. 

She'd have preferred to work out with Jim. 
She'd have preferred to be anywhere 
but here, where young men gawked at her hair 
and old men swooned at the thought of her lingerie. 
"If you've seen one, you've seen the moll," 
Jorie said when asked about C. "Everything she's written

is an imitation of E." Some poems can be written 
only when the poet has fortified herself with gin. 
Others come easily to one as feckless as Moll 
Flanders. Jorie beamed. "It happened here," 
she said. She had worn her best lingerie, 
and D. made the expected pass at her. "My hair 

was big that night, not that I make a fetish of hair, 
but some poems must not be written 
by bald sopranos." That night she lectured on lingerie 
to an enthusiastic audience of female gymnasts and gin-
drinking males. "Utopia," she said, "is nowhere." 
This prompted one critic to declare that, of them all,

all the poets with hair, Jorie was the fairest moll. 
The New York Times voted her "best hair."
Iowa City was said to be the place where 
all aspiring poets went, their poems written 
on water, with blanks instead of words, a tonic
of silence in the heart of noise, and a vision of lingerie

in the bright morning -- the lingerie to be worn by a moll 
holding a tumbler of gin, with her hair 
wet from the shower and her best poems waiting to be written.

Juvenilia An Ode to Natural Beauty

 There is a power whose inspiration fills 
Nature's fair fabric, sun- and star-inwrought, 
Like airy dew ere any drop distils, 
Like perfume in the laden flower, like aught 
Unseen which interfused throughout the whole 
Becomes its quickening pulse and principle and soul. 
Now when, the drift of old desire renewing, 
Warm tides flow northward over valley and field, 
When half-forgotten sound and scent are wooing 
From their deep-chambered recesses long sealed 
Such memories as breathe once more 
Of childhood and the happy hues it wore, 
Now, with a fervor that has never been 
In years gone by, it stirs me to respond, -- 
Not as a force whose fountains are within 
The faculties of the percipient mind, 
Subject with them to darkness and decay, 
But something absolute, something beyond, 
Oft met like tender orbs that seem to peer 
From pale horizons, luminous behind 
Some fringe of tinted cloud at close of day; 
And in this flood of the reviving year, 
When to the loiterer by sylvan streams, 
Deep in those cares that make Youth loveliest, 
Nature in every common aspect seems 
To comment on the burden in his breast -- 
The joys he covets and the dreams he dreams -- 
One then with all beneath the radiant skies 
That laughs with him or sighs, 
It courses through the lilac-scented air, 
A blessing on the fields, a wonder everywhere. 


Spirit of Beauty, whose sweet impulses, 
Flung like the rose of dawn across the sea, 
Alone can flush the exalted consciousness 
With shafts of sensible divinity -- 
Light of the World, essential loveliness: 
Him whom the Muse hath made thy votary 
Not from her paths and gentle precepture 
Shall vulgar ends engage, nor break the spell 
That taught him first to feel thy secret charms 
And o'er the earth, obedient to their lure, 
Their sweet surprise and endless miracle, 
To follow ever with insatiate arms. 
On summer afternoons, 
When from the blue horizon to the shore, 
Casting faint silver pathways like the moon's 
Across the Ocean's glassy, mottled floor, 
Far clouds uprear their gleaming battlements 
Drawn to the crest of some bleak eminence, 
When autumn twilight fades on the sere hill 
And autumn winds are still; 
To watch the East for some emerging sign, 
Wintry Capella or the Pleiades 
Or that great huntsman with the golden gear; 
Ravished in hours like these 
Before thy universal shrine 
To feel the invoked presence hovering near, 
He stands enthusiastic. Star-lit hours 
Spent on the roads of wandering solitude 
Have set their sober impress on his brow, 
And he, with harmonies of wind and wood 
And torrent and the tread of mountain showers, 
Has mingled many a dedicative vow 
That holds him, till thy last delight be known, 
Bound in thy service and in thine alone. 


I, too, among the visionary throng 
Who choose to follow where thy pathway leads, 
Have sold my patrimony for a song, 
And donned the simple, lowly pilgrim's weeds. 
From that first image of beloved walls, 
Deep-bowered in umbrage of ancestral trees, 
Where earliest thy sweet enchantment falls, 
Tingeing a child's fantastic reveries 
With radiance so fair it seems to be 
Of heavens just lost the lingering evidence 
From that first dawn of roseate infancy, 
So long beneath thy tender influence 
My breast has thrilled. As oft for one brief second 
The veil through which those infinite offers beckoned 
Has seemed to tremble, letting through 
Some swift intolerable view 
Of vistas past the sense of mortal seeing, 
So oft, as one whose stricken eyes might see 
In ferny dells the rustic deity, 
I stood, like him, possessed, and all my being, 
Flooded an instant with unwonted light,

Youth's flowers like childhood's fade and are forgot. 
Fame twines a tardy crown of yellowing leaves. 
How swift were disillusion, were it not 
That thou art steadfast where all else deceives! 
Solace and Inspiration, Power divine 
That by some mystic sympathy of thine, 
When least it waits and most hath need of thee, 
Can startle the dull spirit suddenly 
With grandeur welled from unsuspected springs, -- 
Long as the light of fulgent evenings, 
When from warm showers the pearly shades disband 
And sunset opens o'er the humid land, 
Shows thy veiled immanence in orient skies, -- 
Long as pale mist and opalescent dyes 
Hung on far isle or vanishing mountain-crest, 
Fields of remote enchantment can suggest 
So sweet to wander in it matters nought, 
They hold no place but in impassioned thought,

On ample prospects, lost in glimmering haze 
At noon, or where down odorous dales twilit, 
Filled with low thundering of the mountain stream, 
Over the plain where blue seas border it 
The torrid coast-towns gleam. 


I have fared too far to turn back now; my breast 
Burns with the lust for splendors unrevealed, 
Stars of midsummer, clouds out of the west, 
Pallid horizons, winds that valley and field 
Laden with joy, be ye my refuge still! 
What though distress and poverty assail! 
Though other voices chide, yours never will. 
The grace of a blue sky can never fail. 
Powers that my childhood with a spell so sweet, 
My youth with visions of such glory nursed, 
Ye have beheld, nor ever seen my feet 
On any venture set, but 'twas the thirst 
For Beauty willed them, yea, whatever be 
The faults I wanted wings to rise above; 
I am cheered yet to think how steadfastly

Crow And Auden

 A misprint in a newspaper reported: ‘Auden stepped from the train and was greeted by a small but enthusiastic crow.’

‘Hmm,’ Auden thought when first he saw
the bird, as train came to a stop,
‘I’ll make this image mine before
some Yorkshire upstart snaps it up.’

He drew a notebook from his mac’,
unclipped a biro from his tweed,
stared at the crow, the crow stared back
then recognising him indeed

began to stun the platform crowd,
began to flap, began to sing,
and the poet wrote about its loud
and flattering beak, applauding wings.

Reporters, fans all stood amazed.
It seemed as if all clocks had stopped.
Only Auden stood unfazed.
Only his chin hadn’t dropped.

He pulled a Woodbine from its pack,
pulled out a match and struck a light,
stared at the crow, the crow stared back.
The night mail train pulled into sight.

Alexandrian Kings

 The Alexandrians were gathered
to see Cleopatra's children,
Caesarion, and his little brothers,
Alexander and Ptolemy, whom for the first
time they lead out to the Gymnasium,
there to proclaim kings,
in front of the grand assembly of the soldiers.

Alexander -- they named him king
of Armenia, Media, and the Parthians.
Ptolemy -- they named him king
of Cilicia, Syria, and Phoenicia.
Caesarion stood more to the front,
dressed in rose-colored silk,
on his breast a bouquet of hyacinths,
his belt a double row of sapphires and amethysts,
his shoes fastened with white
ribbons embroidered with rose pearls.
Him they named more than the younger ones,
him they named King of Kings.

The Alexandrians of course understood
that those were theatrical words.

But the day was warm and poetic,
the sky was a light azure,
the Alexandrian Gymnasium was
a triumphant achievement of art,
the opulence of the courtiers was extraordinary,
Caesarion was full of grace and beauty
(son of Cleopatra, blood of the Lagidae);
and the Alexandrians rushed to the ceremony,
and got enthusiastic, and cheered
in greek, and egyptian, and some in hebrew,
enchanted by the beautiful spectacle --
although they full well knew what all these were worth,
what hollow words these kingships were.

 EXULT MY MUSE! exult to see 
Each envious, waspish, jealous thing, 
Around its harmless venom fling, 
And dart its powerless fangs at THEE!

That dares, with wild fantastic flight 
The timid child of GENIUS fright; 
That dares with pilfer'd glories shine 
Along the dazzling frenzy'd line, 
Where tinsel splendours cheat the mind, 
While REASON, trembling far behind, 
Drops from her blushing front thy BAYS, 
And scorns to share the wreath of praise. 

But when DIVINE RINALDO flings
Soft rapture o'er the bounding strings;
When the bright flame that fills HIS soul,
Bursts thro' the bonds of calm controul,
And on enthusiastic wings
To Heaven's Eternal Mansion springs,
Or darting thro' the yielding skies,
O'er earth's disastrous valley flies;
Forbear his glorious flight to bind;
YET o'er his TRUE POETIC Mind
Expand thy chaste celestial ray,
Nor let fantastic fires diffuse
Deluding lustre round HIS MUSE,
To lead HER glorious steps astray!
AH ! let his matchless HARP prolong
The thrilling Tone, the classic song, 
STILL bind his Brow with deathless Bays,

Gignol

 Addict of Punch and Judy shows
 I was when I was small;
My kiddy laughter, I suppose,
 Rang louder than them all.
The Judge with banter I would bait,
 The Copper was a wretch;
But oh how I would hiss my hate
 For grim Jack Ketch.

Although a grandsire grey I still
 Love Punch and Judy shows,
And with my toddlers help to fill
 Enthusiastic rows.
How jolly is their mirth to see,
 And what a sigh they fetch,
When Punch begs to be shown and he
 Jerks up Jack Ketch.

Heigh ho! No more I watch the play;
 It is the audience
That gives me my delight today,--
 Such charm of innocence!
Immortal mimes! It seems to me,
 Could I re-live my span,
With gusto I would like to be
 A Punch and Judy Man.

The Actor

 Enthusiastic was the crowd
 That hailed him with delight;
The wine was bright, the laughter loud
 And glorious the night.
But when at dawn he drove away
 With echo of their cheer,
To where his little daughter lay,
 Then he knew-- Fear.

How strangely still the house! He crept
 On tip-toe to the bed;
And there she lay as if she slept
 With candles at her head.
Her mother died to give her birth,
 An angel child was she;
To him the dearest one on earth . . .
 How could it be?

'O God! If she could only live,'
 He thought with bitter pain,
'How gladly, gladly would I give
 My glory and my gain.
I have created many a part,
 And many a triumph known;
Yet here is one with breaking heart
 I play alone.'

Beside the hush of her his breath
 Came with a sobbing sigh.
He babbled: 'Sweet, you play at death . . .
 'Tis I who die.'
