In the Home Stretch

 SHE stood against the kitchen sink, and looked
Over the sink out through a dusty window
At weeds the water from the sink made tall.
She wore her cape; her hat was in her hand.
Behind her was confusion in the room,
Of chairs turned upside down to sit like people
In other chairs, and something, come to look,
For every room a house has—parlor, bed-room,
And dining-room—thrown pell-mell in the kitchen.
And now and then a smudged, infernal face
Looked in a door behind her and addressed
Her back. She always answered without turning.

“Where will I put this walnut bureau, lady?”
“Put it on top of something that’s on top
Of something else,” she laughed. “Oh, put it where
You can to-night, and go. It’s almost dark;
You must be getting started back to town.”
Another blackened face thrust in and looked
And smiled, and when she did not turn, spoke gently,
“What are you seeing out the window, lady?”

“Never was I beladied so before.
Would evidence of having been called lady
More than so many times make me a lady
In common law, I wonder.”

“But I ask,
What are you seeing out the window, lady?”

“What I’ll be seeing more of in the years
To come as here I stand and go the round
Of many plates with towels many times.”

“And what is that? You only put me off.”

“Rank weeds that love the water from the dish-pan
More than some women like the dish-pan, Joe;
A little stretch of mowing-field for you;
Not much of that until I come to woods
That end all. And it’s scarce enough to call
A view.”

“And yet you think you like it, dear?”

“That’s what you’re so concerned to know! You hope
I like it. Bang goes something big away
Off there upstairs. The very tread of men
As great as those is shattering to the frame
Of such a little house. Once left alone,
You and I, dear, will go with softer steps
Up and down stairs and through the rooms, and none
But sudden winds that snatch them from our hands
Will ever slam the doors.”

“I think you see
More than you like to own to out that window.”

“No; for besides the things I tell you of,
I only see the years. They come and go
In alternation with the weeds, the field,
The wood.”

“What kind of years?”
“Why, latter years—
Different from early years.”
“I see them, too.
You didn’t count them?”
“No, the further off
So ran together that I didn’t try to.
It can scarce be that they would be in number
We’d care to know, for we are not young now.
And bang goes something else away off there.
It sounds as if it were the men went down,
And every crash meant one less to return
To lighted city streets we, too, have known,
But now are giving up for country darkness.”

“Come from that window where you see too much for me,
And take a livelier view of things from here.
They’re going. Watch this husky swarming up
Over the wheel into the sky-high seat,
Lighting his pipe now, squinting down his nose
At the flame burning downward as he sucks it.”

“See how it makes his nose-side bright, a proof
How dark it’s getting. Can you tell what time
It is by that? Or by the moon? The new moon!
What shoulder did I see her over? Neither.
A wire she is of silver, as new as we
To everything. Her light won’t last us long.
It’s something, though, to know we’re going to have her
Night after night and stronger every night
To see us through our first two weeks. But, Joe,
The stove! Before they go! Knock on the window;
Ask them to help you get it on its feet.
We stand here dreaming. Hurry! Call them back!”

“They’re not gone yet.”

“We’ve got to have the stove,
Whatever else we want for. And a light.
Have we a piece of candle if the lamp
And oil are buried out of reach?”
Again
The house was full of tramping, and the dark,
Door-filling men burst in and seized the stove.
A cannon-mouth-like hole was in the wall,
To which they set it true by eye; and then
Came up the jointed stovepipe in their hands,
So much too light and airy for their strength
It almost seemed to come ballooning up,
Slipping from clumsy clutches toward the ceiling.
“A fit!” said one, and banged a stovepipe shoulder.
“It’s good luck when you move in to begin
With good luck with your stovepipe. Never mind,
It’s not so bad in the country, settled down,
When people ’re getting on in life, You’ll like it.”
Joe said: “You big boys ought to find a farm,
And make good farmers, and leave other fellows
The city work to do. There’s not enough
For everybody as it is in there.”
“God!” one said wildly, and, when no one spoke:
“Say that to Jimmy here. He needs a farm.”
But Jimmy only made his jaw recede
Fool-like, and rolled his eyes as if to say
He saw himself a farmer. Then there was a French boy
Who said with seriousness that made them laugh,
“Ma friend, you ain’t know what it is you’re ask.”
He doffed his cap and held it with both hands
Across his chest to make as ’twere a bow:
“We’re giving you our chances on de farm.”
And then they all turned to with deafening boots
And put each other bodily out of the house.
“Goodby to them! We puzzle them. They think—
I don’t know what they think we see in what
They leave us to: that pasture slope that seems
The back some farm presents us; and your woods
To northward from your window at the sink,
Waiting to steal a step on us whenever
We drop our eyes or turn to other things,
As in the game ‘Ten-step’ the children play.”

“Good boys they seemed, and let them love the city.
All they could say was ‘God!’ when you proposed
Their coming out and making useful farmers.”

“Did they make something lonesome go through you?
It would take more than them to sicken you—
Us of our bargain. But they left us so
As to our fate, like fools past reasoning with.
They almost shook me.”

“It’s all so much
What we have always wanted, I confess
It’s seeming bad for a moment makes it seem
Even worse still, and so on down, down, down.
It’s nothing; it’s their leaving us at dusk.
I never bore it well when people went.
The first night after guests have gone, the house
Seems haunted or exposed. I always take
A personal interest in the locking up
At bedtime; but the strangeness soon wears off.”
He fetched a dingy lantern from behind
A door. “There’s that we didn’t lose! And these!”—
Some matches he unpocketed. “For food—
The meals we’ve had no one can take from us.
I wish that everything on earth were just
As certain as the meals we’ve had. I wish
The meals we haven’t had were, anyway.
What have you you know where to lay your hands on?”

“The bread we bought in passing at the store.
There’s butter somewhere, too.”

“Let’s rend the bread.
I’ll light the fire for company for you;
You’ll not have any other company
Till Ed begins to get out on a Sunday
To look us over and give us his idea
Of what wants pruning, shingling, breaking up.
He’ll know what he would do if he were we,
And all at once. He’ll plan for us and plan
To help us, but he’ll take it out in planning.
Well, you can set the table with the loaf.
Let’s see you find your loaf. I’ll light the fire.
I like chairs occupying other chairs
Not offering a lady—”

“There again, Joe!
You’re tired.”

“I’m drunk-nonsensical tired out;
Don’t mind a word I say. It’s a day’s work
To empty one house of all household goods
And fill another with ’em fifteen miles away,
Although you do no more than dump them down.”

“Dumped down in paradise we are and happy.”

“It’s all so much what I have always wanted,
I can’t believe it’s what you wanted, too.”

“Shouldn’t you like to know?”

“I’d like to know
If it is what you wanted, then how much
You wanted it for me.”

“A troubled conscience!
You don’t want me to tell if I don’t know.”

“I don’t want to find out what can’t be known.

But who first said the word to come?”

“My dear,
It’s who first thought the thought. You’re searching, Joe,
For things that don’t exist; I mean beginnings.
Ends and beginnings—there are no such things.

You won’t deny the lantern isn’t new.

To drag you out for just a good-night call
On the old peach trees on the knoll to grope
By starlight in the grass for a last peach
The neighbors may not have taken as their right
When the house wasn’t lived in? I’ve been looking:
I doubt if they have left us many grapes.
Before we set ourselves to right the house,
The first thing in the morning, out we go
To go the round of apple, cherry, peach,
Pine, alder, pasture, mowing, well, and brook.
All of a farm it is.”

I have to make you build it. Come, the light.”

When there was no more lantern in the kitchen,
The fire got out through crannies in the stove
And danced in yellow wrigglers on the ceiling,

A SONG of the good green grass! 
A song no more of the city streets; 
A song of farms—a song of the soil of fields. 

A song with the smell of sun-dried hay, where the nimble pitchers handle the pitch-fork; 
A song tasting of new wheat, and of fresh-husk’d maize.

When late I sang, sad was my voice; 
Sad were the shows around me, with deafening noises of hatred, and smoke of conflict; 
In the midst of the armies, the Heroes, I stood, 
Or pass’d with slow step through the wounded and dying. 

But now I sing not War,
Nor the measur’d march of soldiers, nor the tents of camps, 
Nor the regiments hastily coming up, deploying in line of battle. 

No more the dead and wounded; 
No more the sad, unnatural shows of War. 

Ask’d room those flush’d immortal ranks? the first forth-stepping armies?
Ask room, alas, the ghastly ranks—the armies dread that follow’d.

So handsome, dress’d in blue—with your tramping, sinewy legs;

On the far-stretching beauteous landscape, the roads and lanes, the high-piled

Ah, the dead to me mar not—they fit well in Nature; 
They fit very well in the landscape, under the trees and grass, 
And along the edge of the sky, in the horizon’s far margin. 

Nor do I forget you, departed; 
Nor in winter or summer, my lost ones;
But most, in the open air, as now, when my soul is rapt and at peace—like pleasing

I saw the day, the return of the Heroes;

No holiday soldiers!—youthful, yet veterans;

Harden’d of many a long campaign and sweaty march, 
Inured on many a hard-fought, bloody field.

A million flush’d, embattled conquerors wait; 
The world, too, waits—then, soft as breaking night, and sure as dawn,
They melt—they disappear. 

Exult, indeed, O lands! victorious lands! 
Not there your victory, on those red, shuddering fields; 
But here and hence your victory. 

Melt, melt away, ye armies! disperse, ye blue-clad soldiers!
Resolve ye back again—give up, for good, your deadly arms; 
Other the arms, the fields henceforth for you, or South or North, or East or West, 
With saner wars—sweet wars—life-giving wars.

Over the fields of the West, those crawling monsters, 
The human-divine inventions, the labor-saving implements:
Beholdest, moving in every direction, imbued as with life, the revolving hay-rakes,

The Lion For Real

 "Soyez muette pour moi, Idole contemplative..."


I came home and found a lion in my living room
Rushed out on the fire escape screaming Lion! Lion!
Two stenographers pulled their brunnette hair and banged the window shut
I hurried home to Patterson and stayed two days

Called up old Reichian analyst
who'd kicked me out of therapy for smoking marijuana
'It's happened' I panted 'There's a Lion in my living room'
'I'm afraid any discussion would have no value' he hung up

I went to my old boyfriend we got drunk with his girlfriend
I kissed him and announced I had a lion with a mad gleam in my eye
We wound up fighting on the floor I bit his eyebrow he kicked me out
I ended up masturbating in his jeep parked in the street moaning 'Lion.'

Found Joey my novelist friend and roared at him 'Lion!'
He looked at me interested and read me his spontaneous ignu high poetries
I listened for lions all I heard was Elephant Tiglon Hippogriff Unicorn
 Ants
But figured he really understood me when we made it in Ignaz Wisdom's 
 bathroom.

But next day he sent me a leaf from his Smoky Mountain retreat
'I love you little Bo-Bo with your delicate golden lions
But there being no Self and No Bars therefore the Zoo of your dear Father
 hath no lion
You said your mother was mad don't expect me to produce the Monster for
 your Bridegroom.'

Confused dazed and exalted bethought me of real lion starved in his stink
 in Harlem
Opened the door the room was filled with the bomb blast of his anger
He roaring hungrily at the plaster walls but nobody could hear outside
 thru the window
My eye caught the edge of the red neighbor apartment building standing in
 deafening stillness
We gazed at each other his implacable yellow eye in the red halo of fur
Waxed rhuemy on my own but he stopped roaring and bared a fang
 greeting.
I turned my back and cooked broccoli for supper on an iron gas stove
boilt water and took a hot bath in the old tup under the sink board.

He didn't eat me, tho I regretted him starving in my presence.
Next week he wasted away a sick rug full of bones wheaten hair falling out
enraged and reddening eye as he lay aching huge hairy head on his paws
by the egg-crate bookcase filled up with thin volumes of Plato, & Buddha.

Sat by his side every night averting my eyes from his hungry motheaten
 face
stopped eating myself he got weaker and roared at night while I had 
 nightmares
Eaten by lion in bookstore on Cosmic Campus, a lion myself starved by
 Professor Kandisky, dying in a lion's flophouse circus,
I woke up mornings the lion still added dying on the floor--'Terrible
 Presence!'I cried'Eat me or die!'

It got up that afternoon--walked to the door with its paw on the south wall to
 steady its trembling body
Let out a soul-rending creak from the bottomless roof of his mouth
thundering from my floor to heaven heavier than a volcano at night in
 Mexico
Pushed the door open and said in a gravelly voice "Not this time Baby--
 but I will be back again."

Lion that eats my mind now for a decade knowing only your hunger
Not the bliss of your satisfaction O roar of the universe how am I chosen
In this life I have heard your promise I am ready to die I have served
Your starved and ancient Presence O Lord I wait in my room at your
 Mercy.

Song of the Universal

COME, said the Muse, 
Sing me a song no poet yet has chanted, 
Sing me the Universal. 

In this broad Earth of ours, 
Amid the measureless grossness and the slag,
Enclosed and safe within its central heart, 
Nestles the seed Perfection. 

By every life a share, or more or less, 
None born but it is born—conceal’d or unconceal’d, the seed is waiting.

Lo! keen-eyed, towering Science!
As from tall peaks the Modern overlooking, 
Successive, absolute fiats issuing. 

Yet again, lo! the Soul—above all science; 
For it, has History gather’d like a husk around the globe; 
For it, the entire star-myriads roll through the sky.

In spiral roads, by long detours, 
(As a much-tacking ship upon the sea,) 
For it, the partial to the permanent flowing, 
For it, the Real to the Ideal tends. 

For it, the mystic evolution;
Not the right only justified—what we call evil also justified. 

Forth from their masks, no matter what, 
From the huge, festering trunk—from craft and guile and tears, 
Health to emerge, and joy—joy universal. 

Out of the bulk, the morbid and the shallow,
Out of the bad majority—the varied, countless frauds of men and States, 

Electric, antiseptic yet—cleaving, suffusing all, 
Only the good is universal.

Over the mountain growths, disease and sorrow, 
An uncaught bird is ever hovering, hovering,
High in the purer, happier air. 

From imperfection’s murkiest cloud, 
Darts always forth one ray of perfect light, 
One flash of Heaven’s glory.

To the mad Babel-din, the deafening orgies, 
Soothing each lull, a strain is heard, just heard,

Donica - A Ballad

 Author Note: In Finland there is a Castle which is called the New Rock, moated about with a river of unfounded depth, the water black and the fish therein
very distateful to the palate. In this are spectres often seen, which
foreshew either the death of the Governor, or some prime officer
belonging to the place; and most commonly it appeareth in the shape of
an harper, sweetly singing and dallying and playing under the water.

It is reported of one Donica, that after she was dead, the Devil walked
in her body for the space of two years, so that none suspected but that
she was still alive; for she did both speak and eat, though very
sparingly; only she had a deep paleness on her countenance, which was
the only sign of death. At length a Magician coming by where she was
then in the company of many other virgins, as soon as he beheld her he
said, "fair Maids, why keep you company with the dead Virgin whom you
suppose to be alive?" when taking away the magic charm which was tied
under her arm, the body fell down lifeless and without motion.

The following Ballad is founded on these stories. They are to be found
in the notes to The Hierarchies of the blessed Angels; a Poem by Thomas
Heywood, printed in folio by Adam Islip, 1635.

Darken'd the lake below,
In ancient strength majestic stood
The towers of Arlinkow.

The fisher in the lake below
Durst never cast his net,

And brightly o'er the water stream'd
The liquid radiance wide;
Donica's little dog ran on
And gambol'd at her side.

Youth, Health, and Love bloom'd on her cheek,
Her full dark eyes express
In many a glance to Eberhard
Her soul's meek tenderness.

Nor sound was heard, nor passing gale
Sigh'd thro' the long lank sedge,
The air was hushed, no little wave
Dimpled the water's edge.

Sudden the unfathom'd lake sent forth
Strange music from beneath,
And slowly o'er the waters sail'd
The solemn sounds of Death.

As the deep sounds of Death arose,
Donica's cheek grew pale,
And in the arms of Eberhard
The senseless Maiden fell.

Loudly the youth in terror shriek'd,
And loud he call'd for aid,
And with a wild and eager look
Gaz'd on the death-pale Maid.

But soon again did better thoughts
In Eberhard arise,
And he with trembling hope beheld
The Maiden raise her eyes.

And on his arm reclin'd she moved
With feeble pace and slow,
And soon with strength recover'd reach'd

Yet never to Donica's cheek
Return'd the lively hue,
Her cheeks were deathy, white, and wan,
Her lips a livid blue.

Her eyes so bright and black of yore
Were now more black and bright,
And beam'd strange lustre in her face
So deadly wan and white.

The dog that gambol'd by her side,
And lov'd with her to stray,
Now at his alter'd mistress howl'd
And fled in fear away.

Yet did the faithful Eberhard
Not love the Maid the less;
He gaz'd with sorrow, but he gaz'd
With deeper tenderness.

And when he found her health unharm'd
He would not brook delay,
But press'd the not unwilling Maid
To fix the bridal day.

And when at length it came, with joy
They hail'd the bridal day,
And onward to the house of God
They went their willing way.

And as they at the altar stood
And heard the sacred rite,
The hallowed tapers dimly stream'd
A pale sulphureous light.

And as the Youth with holy warmth
Her hand in his did hold,
Sudden he felt Donica's hand
Grow deadly damp and cold.

And loudly did he shriek, for lo!
A Spirit met his view,
And Eberhard in the angel form
His own Donica knew.

That instant from her earthly frame
Howling the Daemon fled,
And at the side of Eberhard
The livid form fell dead.

Not What Was Meant

 When the Academy of Arts demanded freedom
Of artistic expression from narrow-minded bureaucrats
There was a howl and a clamour in its immediate vicinity
But roaring above everything
Came a deafening thunder of applause
From beyond the Sector boundary.
Freedom! it roared. Freedom for the artists!
Freedom all round! Freedom for all!
Freedom for the exploiters! Freedom for the warmongers!
Freedom for the Ruhr cartels! Freedom for Hitler's generals!
Softly, my dear fellows...
The Judas kiss for the artists follows
Hard on the Judas kiss for the workers.
The arsonist with his bottle of petrol
Sneaks up grinning to
The Academy of Arts.
But it was not to embrace him, just
To knock the bottle out of his dirty hand that
We asked for elbow room.
Even the narrowest minds
In which peace is harboured
Are more welcome to the arts than the art lover

Subway Wind

 Far down, down through the city's great, gaunt gut, 
The gray train rushing bears the weary wind; 
In the packed cars the fans the crowd's breath cut, 
Leaving the sick and heavy air behind. 
And pale-cheeked children seek the upper door 
To give their summer jackets to the breeze; 
Their laugh is swallowed in the deafening roar 
Of captive wind that moans for fields and seas; 
Seas cooling warm where native schooners drift 
Through sleepy waters, while gulls wheel and sweep, 
Waiting for windy waves the keels to lift 
Lightly among the islands of the deep; 
Islands of lofty palm trees blooming white 
That lend their perfume to the tropic sea, 
Where fields lie idle in the dew drenched night, 
And the Trades float above them fresh and free.

Rise O Days

 1
RISE, O days, from your fathomless deeps, till you loftier, fiercer sweep! 
Long for my soul, hungering gymnastic, I devour’d what the earth gave me; 
Long I roam’d the woods of the north—long I watch’d Niagara pouring; 
I travel’d the prairies over, and slept on their breast—I cross’d the
 Nevadas, I
 cross’d the plateaus; 
I ascended the towering rocks along the Pacific, I sail’d out to sea;
I sail’d through the storm, I was refresh’d by the storm; 
I watch’d with joy the threatening maws of the waves; 
I mark’d the white combs where they career’d so high, curling over; 
I heard the wind piping, I saw the black clouds; 
Saw from below what arose and mounted, (O superb! O wild as my heart, and powerful!)
Heard the continuous thunder, as it bellow’d after the lightning; 
Noted the slender and jagged threads of lightning, as sudden and fast amid the din they

—These, and such as these, I, elate, saw—saw with wonder, yet pensive and
 masterful; 
All the menacing might of the globe uprisen around me;

’Twas well, O soul! ’twas a good preparation you gave me!

The Old Woman of Berkeley

 The Raven croak'd as she sate at her meal, 
And the Old Woman knew what he said, 
And she grew pale at the Raven's tale, 
And sicken'd and went to her bed. 

'Now fetch me my children, and fetch them with speed,' 
The Old Woman of Berkeley said, 
'The Monk my son, and my daughter the Nun, 
Bid them hasten or I shall be dead.' 

The Monk her son, and her daughter the Nun, 
Their way to Berkeley went, 
And they have brought with pious thought 
The holy sacrament. 

The Old Woman shriek'd as they enter'd her door, 
And she cried with a voice of despair, 
'Now take away the sacrament, 
For its presence I cannot bear!' 

Her lip it trembled with agony, 
The sweat ran down her brow, 
'I have tortures in store for evermore, 
But spare me, my children, now!' 

Away they sent the sacrament, 
The fit it left her weak, 
She look's at her children with ghastly eyes, 
And faintly struggled to speak. 

'All kind of sin have I rioted in, 
And the judgement now must be, 
But I secured my children's souls, 
Oh! pray, my children, for me! 

'I have 'nointed myself with infant's fat, 
The fiends have been my slaves, 
From sleeping babes I have suck'd the breath, 
And breaking by charms the sleep of death, 
I have call'd the dead from their graves. 

'And the Devil will fetch me now in fire, 
My witchcrafts to atone; 
And I who have troubled the dead man's grave 
Shall never have rest in my own. 

'Bless, I entreat, my winding sheet, 
My children, I beg of you; 
And with holy water sprinkle my shroud, 
And sprinkle my coffin, too. 

'And let me be chain'd in my coffin of stone, 
And fasten it strong, I implore, 
With iron bars, and with three chains, 
Chain it to the church floor. 

'And bless the chains and sprinkle them, 
And let fifty Priests stand round, 
Who night and day the mass may say 
Where I lie on the ground. 

'And see that fifty Choristers 
Beside the bier attend me, 
And day and night by the tapers' light, 
With holy hymns defend me. 

'Let the church bells all, both great and small, 
Be toll'd by night and day, 
To drive from thence the fiends who come 
To bear my body away. 

`And ever have the church door barr'd 
After the even-song; 
And I beseech you, children dear, 
Let the bars and bolts be strong.

My wretched corpse to save; 
Till the fourth morning keep me safe, 
And then I may rest in my grave.' 

The Old Woman of Berkeley laid her down, 
And her eyes grew deadly dim, 
Short came her breath, and the struggle of death 
Did loosen every limb. 

They blest the old woman's winding sheet 
With rites and prayers due, 
With holy water they sprinkled her shroud, 
And they sprinkled her coffin too. 

And they chain'd her in her coffin of stone, 
And with iron barr'd it down, 
And in the church with three strong chains 
The chain'd it to the ground. 

And they blest the chains and sprinkled them, 
And fifty Priests stood round, 
By night and day the mass to say 
Where she lay on the ground. 

And fifty sacred Choristers 
Beside the bier attend her, 
Who day and night by the taper's light 
Should with holy hymns defend her. 

To see the Priests and Choristers 
It was a goodly sight, 
Each holding, as it were a staff, 
A taper burning bright. 

And the church bells all, both great and small, 
Did toll so loud and long; 
And they have barr'd the church door hard, 
After the even-song. 

And the first night the tapers' light 
Burnt steadily and clear, 
But they without a hideous rout 
Of angry fiends could hear; 

A hideous roar at the church door 
Like a long thunder peal; 
And the Priests they pray'd, and the Choristers sung 
Louder in fearful zeal. 

Loud toll'd the bell, the Priests pray'd well, 
The tapers they burnt bright, 
The Monk her son, and her daughter the Nun, 
They told their beads all night. 

The cock he crew, the Fiends they flew 
From the voice of the morning away; 
Then undisturb'd the Choristers sing, 
And the fifty Priests they pray; 
As they had sung and pray'd all night, 
They pray'd and sung all day. 

The second night the tapers' light 
Burnt dismally and blue, 
And every one saw his neighbour's face 
Like a dead man's face to view. 

And yells and cries without arise 
That the stoutest heart might shock, 
And a deafening roar like a cataract pouring 
Over a mountain rock. 

The Monk and Nun they told their beads 
As fast as they could tell, 
And aye as louder grew the noise 
The faster went the bell. 

Louder and louder the Choristers sung 
As they trembled more and more, 
And the Priests as they pray'd to heaven for aid, 
They smote their breasts full sore. 

The cock he crew, the Fiends they flew 
From the voice of the morning away; 
Then undisturb'd the Choristers sing, 
And the fifty Priests they pray; 
As they had sung and pray'd all night, 
The pray'd and sung all day. 

The third night came, and the tapers' flame 
A frightful stench did make; 
And they burnt as though they had been dipt 
In the burning brimstone lake. 

And the loud commotion, like the rushing of ocean, 
Grew momently more and more; 
And strokes as of a battering ram 
Did shake the strong church door. 

The bellmen, they for very fear 
Could toll the bell no longer; 
And still as louder grew the strokes 
Their fear it grew the stronger. 

The Monk and Nun forgot their beads, 
They fell on the ground in dismay; 
There was not a single Saint in heaven 
To whom they did not pray. 

And the Choristers' song, which late was so strong, 
Falter'd with consternation, 
For the church did rock as an earthquake shock 
Uplifed its foundation. 

And a sound was heard like the trumpet's blast, 
That shall one day wake the dead; 
The strong church door could bear no more, 
And the bolts and the bars they fled; 

And the tapers' light was extinguish'd quite, 
And the Choristers faintly sung, 
And the Priests dismay'd, panted and pray'd, 
And on all the Saints in heaven for aid 
They call'd with trembling tongue. 

And in He came with eyes of flame, 
The Devil to fetch the dead, 
And all the church with his presence glow'd 
Like a fiery furnace red. 

He laid his hand on the iron chains, 
And like flax they moulder'd asunder, 
And the coffin lid, which was barr'd so firm, 
He burst with his voice of thunder. 

And he bade the Old Woman of Berkeley rise, 
And some with her Master away; 
A cold sweat started on that cold corpse, 
At the voice she was forced to obey. 

She rose on her feet in her winding sheet, 
Her dead flesh quiver'd with fear, 
And a groan like that which the Old Woman gave 
Never did mortal hear. 

She follow'd her Master to the church door, 
There stood a black horse there; 
His breath was red like furnace smoke, 
His eyes like a meteor's glare. 

The Devil he flung her on the horse, 
And he leapt up before, 
And away like the lightning's speed they went, 
And she was seen no more. 

They saw her no more, but her cries 
For four miles round they could hear, 
And children at rest at their mothers' breast 
Started, and scream'd with fear.

Bill Bowls the Sailor

 'Twas about the beginning of the present century,
Bill Bowls was pressed, and sent to sea;
And conveyed on board the Waterwitch without delay,
Scarce getting time to bid farewell to the villagers of Fairway · 

And once on board the "Waterwitch," he resolved to do his duty,
And God willing, he'd marry Nelly Blyth, the village beauty;
And he'd fight for Old England, like a jolly British tar,
But he'd think of Nelly Blyth during the war. 

The poor fellow little imagined what he had to go through,
But in ail his trials at sea, he never did rue;
No; the brave tar became reconciled to his fate,
And he felt proud of his commander, Captain Ward the great. 

And on board the "Waterwitch" was Tom Riggles, his old comrade,
And with such a one as Tom Riggles he seldom felt afraid,
Because the stories they told on board made the time fly away,
And made the hearts of their messmates feel light and gay. 

'Twas on a sunny morning, and clear to the view,
Captain Ward the close attention of his men he drew:
Look ! he cried, there's two Frenchmen of war on our right,
Therefore, prepare my men immediately to commence the fight. 

Then the "Waterwitch" was steered to the ship most near,
While every man resolved to sell his life most dear;
But the French commander, disinclined to commence the fight,
Ordered his men to put on a press of canvas and take to flight. 

But Captain Ward quickly gave the order to fire,
Then Bill Bowls cried, Now we'll get fighting to our heart's desire!
And for an hour and more a running fight was maintained,
Until the two ships of the enemy near upon the "Waterwitch" gained. 

Captain Ward walked the deck with a firm tread,
When a shot from the enemy pierced the ship's side above his head;
And with a splinter Bill Bowls was wounded on the left arm,
And he cried, Death to the frog-eaters! they have done me little harm. 

Then Captain Ward cried, Fear not, we will win the day,
Now, courage my men, pour in broadsides without delay;
Then they sailed round the "St. Denis" and the "Gloire,"
And in at their cabin windows they poured a deadly fire. 

The effect on the two ships was fearful to behold,
But still the Frenchmen stuck to their guns with courage, be it told;
And the crash and din of artillery was deafening to the ear,
And the cries of the wounded men on deck were pitiful to hear. 

Then Captain Ward to his men did say,
We must board these French ships without dismay;
Then he seized his cutlass, ashe fearlessly spoke,
And jumped on board the "St. Denis" in the midst of the smoke. 

Then Bill Bowls and Tom Riggles quickly followed him,
Then hand to hand the battle in earnest did begin;
And the men sprang upon their foes and beat them back,
And they hauled down their colours, and hoisted the Union Jack. 

But the men on board the "St. Denis" fought desperately hard,
But, alas! as the "St Denis" was captured, a ball struck Captain Ward
Right on the forehead, and he fell dead with a groan,
And for the death of Captain Ward the sailors did cry and moan. 

Then the first lieutenant, who was standing by,
Loudly to the men did cry:
Come men, and carry your noble commander to his cabin below,
But there is one consolation, we have beaten the foe. 

And thus fell Captain Ward in the prime of his life,
And I hope he is now in the better land, free from strife:
But, alas! 'tis sad to think he was buried in the mighty deep,
Where too many of our brave seamen do silently sleep. 

The "St. Denis" and the "Gloire" were towed to Gibraltar, the nearest port,
But by capturing of them, they felt but little sport,
Because, for the loss of Captain Ward, the men felt woebegone,
Because in bravery, they said, he was next to Admiral Nelson.
