On the Disastrous Spread of Aestheticism in all Classes

 Impetuously I sprang from bed,
Long before lunch was up,
That I might drain the dizzy dew
From the day's first golden cup.
In swift devouring ecstasy Each toil in turn was done; I had done lying on the lawn Three minutes after one.
For me, as Mr.
Wordsworth says, The duties shine like stars; I formed my uncle's character, Decreasing his cigars.
But could my kind engross me? No! Stern Art-what sons escape her? Soon I was drawing Gladstone's nose On scraps of blotting paper.
Then on-to play one-fingered tunes Upon my aunt's piano.
In short, I have a headlong soul, I much resemble Hanno.
(Forgive the entrance of the not Too cogent Carthaginian.
It may have been to make a rhyme; I lean to that opinion.
) Then my great work of book research Till dusk I took in hand- The forming of a final, sound Opinion on The Strand.
But when I quenched the midnight oil, And closed the Referee, Whose thirty volumes folio I take to bed with me, I had a rather funny dream, Intense, that is, and mystic; I dreamed that, with one leap and yell, The world became artistic.
The Shopmen, when their souls were still, Declined to open shops- And Cooks recorded frames of mind In sad and subtle chops.
The stars were weary of routine: The trees in the plantation Were growing every fruit at once, In search of sensation.
The moon went for a moonlight stroll, And tried to be a bard, And gazed enraptured at itself: I left it trying hard.
The sea had nothing but a mood Of 'vague ironic gloom,' With which t'explain its presence in My upstairs drawing-room.
The sun had read a little book That struck him with a notion: He drowned himself and all his fires Deep in a hissing ocean.
Then all was dark, lawless, and lost: I heard great devilish wings: I knew that Art had won, and snapt The Covenant of Things.
I cried aloud, and I awoke, New labours in my head.
I set my teeth, and manfully Began to lie in bed.
Toiling, rejoicing, sorrowing, So I my life conduct.
Each morning see some task begun, Each evening see it chucked.
But still, in sudden moods of dusk, I hear those great weird wings, Feel vaguely thankful to the vast Stupidity of things.
Envoi Clear was the night: the moon was young The larkspurs in the plots Mingled their orange with the gold Of the forget-me-nots.
The poppies seemed a silver mist: So darkly fell the gloom.
You scarce had guessed yon crimson streaks Were buttercups in bloom.

I looked into his awful eyes: I waited his decree: I made ingenious attempts To sit upon his knee.
The babe upraised his wondering eyes, And timidly he said, "A trend towards experiment In modern minds is bred.
"I feel the will to roam, to learn By test, experience, nous, That fire is hot and ocean deep, And wolves carnivorous.
"My brain demands complexity," The lisping cherub cried.
I looked at him, and only said, "Go on.
The world is wide.
" A tear rolled down his pinafore, "Yet from my life must pass The simple love of sun and moon, The old games in the grass; "Now that my back is to my home Could these again be found?" I looked on him and only said, "Go on.
The world is round.

While The Bannock Bakes

 Light up your pipe again, old chum, and sit awhile with me;
I've got to watch the bannock bake -- how restful is the air!
You'd little think that we were somewhere north of Sixty-three,
Though where I don't exactly know, and don't precisely care.
The man-size mountains palisade us round on every side; The river is a-flop with fish, and ripples silver-clear; The midnight sunshine brims yon cleft -- we think it's the Divide; We'll get there in a month, maybe, or maybe in a year.
It doesn't matter, does it, pal? We're of that breed of men With whom the world of wine and cards and women disagree; Your trouble was a roofless game of poker now and then, And "raising up my elbow", that's what got away with me.
We're merely "Undesirables", artistic more or less; My horny hands are Chopin-wise; you quote your Browning well; And yet we're fooling round for gold in this damned wilderness: The joke is, if we found it, we would both go straight to hell.
Well, maybe we won't find it -- and at least we've got the "life".
We're both as brown as berries, and could wrestle with a bear: (That bannock's raising nicely, pal; just jab it with your knife.
) Fine specimens of manhood they would reckon us out there.
It's the tracking and the packing and the poling in the sun; It's the sleeping in the open, it's the rugged, unfaked food; It's the snow-shoe and the paddle, and the campfire and the gun, And when I think of what I was, I know that it is good.
Just think of how we've poled all day up this strange little stream; Since life began no eye of man has seen this place before; How fearless all the wild things are! the banks with goose-grass gleam, And there's a bronzy musk-rat sitting sniffing at his door.
A mother duck with brood of ten comes squattering along; The tawny, white-winged ptarmigan are flying all about; And in that swirly, golden pool, a restless, gleaming throng, The trout are waiting till we condescend to take them out.
Ah, yes, it's good! I'll bet that there's no doctor like the Wild: (Just turn that bannock over there; it's getting nicely brown.
) I might be in my grave by now, forgotten and reviled, Or rotting like a sickly cur in some far, foreign town.
I might be that vile thing I was, -- it all seems like a dream; I owed a man a grudge one time that only life could pay; And yet it's half-forgotten now -- how petty these things seem! (But that's "another story", pal; I'll tell it you some day.
) How strange two "irresponsibles" should chum away up here! But round the Arctic Circle friends are few and far between.
We've shared the same camp-fire and tent for nigh on seven year, And never had a word that wasn't cheering and serene.
We've halved the toil and split the spoil, and borne each other's packs; By all the Wild's freemasonry we're brothers, tried and true; We've swept on danger side by side, and fought it back to back, And you would die for me, old pal, and I would die for you.
Now there was that time I got lost in Rory Bory Land, (How quick the blizzards sweep on one across that Polar sea!) You formed a rescue crew of One, and saw a frozen hand That stuck out of a drift of snow -- and, partner, it was Me.
But I got even, did I not, that day the paddle broke? White water on the Coppermine -- a rock -- a split canoe -- Two fellows struggling in the foam (one couldn't swim a stroke): A half-drowned man I dragged ashore .

* * * * * In Rory Borealis Land the winter's long and black.
The silence seems a solid thing, shot through with wolfish woe; And rowelled by the eager stars the skies vault vastly back, And man seems but a little mite on that weird-lit plateau.
No thing to do but smoke and yarn of wild and misspent lives, Beside the camp-fire there we sat -- what tales you told to me Of love and hate, and chance and fate, and temporary wives! In Rory Borealis Land, beside the Arctic Sea.
One yarn you told me in those days I can remember still; It seemed as if I visioned it, so sharp you sketched it in; Bellona was the name, I think; a coast town in Brazil, Where nobody did anything but serenade and sin.
I saw it all -- the jewelled sea, the golden scythe of sand, The stately pillars of the palms, the feathery bamboo, The red-roofed houses and the swart, sun-dominated land, The people ever children, and the heavens ever blue.
You told me of that girl of yours, that blossom of old Spain, All glamour, grace and witchery, all passion, verve and glow.
How maddening she must have been! You made me see her plain, There by our little camp-fire, in the silence and the snow.
You loved her and she loved you.
She'd a husband, too, I think, A doctor chap, you told me, whom she treated like a dog, A white man living on the beach, a hopeless slave to drink -- (Just turn that bannock over there, that's propped against the log.
) That story seemed to strike me, pal -- it happens every day: You had to go away awhile, then somehow it befell The doctor chap discovered, gave her up, and disappeared; You came back, tired of her in time .

Hist! see those willows silvering where swamp and river meet! Just reach me up my rifle quick; that's Mister Moose, I know -- There now, I've got him dead to rights .

Heigh ho! I'm tired; the bannock's cooked; it's time we both turned in.
The morning mist is coral-kissed, the morning sky is gold.
The camp-fire's a confessional -- what funny yarns we spin! It sort of made me think a bit, that story that you told.
The fig-leaf belt and Rory Bory are such odd extremes, Yet after all how very small this old world seems to be .

Not What Was Meant

 When the Academy of Arts demanded freedom
Of artistic expression from narrow-minded bureaucrats
There was a howl and a clamour in its immediate vicinity
But roaring above everything
Came a deafening thunder of applause
From beyond the Sector boundary.
Freedom! it roared.
Freedom for the artists! Freedom all round! Freedom for all! Freedom for the exploiters! Freedom for the warmongers! Freedom for the Ruhr cartels! Freedom for Hitler's generals! Softly, my dear fellows.

The arsonist with his bottle of petrol Sneaks up grinning to The Academy of Arts.
But it was not to embrace him, just To knock the bottle out of his dirty hand that We asked for elbow room.

The Firemens Ball

 SECTION ONE

"Give the engines room,

" Louder, faster The little band-master Whips up the fluting, Hurries up the tooting.
He thinks that he stands, [*] The reins in his hands, In the fire-chief's place In the night alarm chase.
The cymbals whang, The kettledrums bang: — "Clear the street, Clear the street, Clear the street — Boom, boom.

Lest souls be trapped In a terrible tomb.
" The sparks and the pine-brands Whirl on high From the black and reeking alleys To the wide red sky.

Coal black streams Down the gutters pour.
There are cries for help From a far fifth floor.
For a longer ladder Hear the fire-chief call.

Flowering Eucalypt In Autumn

 That slim creek out of the sky
the dried-blood western gum tree
is all stir in its high reaches:

its strung haze-blue foliage is dancing
points down in breezy mobs, swapping
pace and place in an all-over sway

retarded en masse by crimson blossom.
Bees still at work up there tack around their exploded furry likeness and the lawn underneath's a napped rug of eyelash drift, of blooms flared like a sneeze in a redhaired nostril, minute urns, pinch-sized rockets knocked down by winds, by night-creaking fig-squirting bats, or the daily parrot gang with green pocketknife wings.
Bristling food tough delicate raucous life, each flower comes as a spray in its own turned vase, a taut starbust, honeyed model of the tree's fragrance crisping in your head.
When the japanese plum tree was shedding in spring, we speculated there among the drizzling petals what kind of exquisitely precious artistic bloom might be gendered in a pure ethereal compost of petals potted as they fell.
From unpetalled gun-debris we know what is grown continually, a tower of fabulous swish tatters, a map hoisted upright, a crusted riverbed with up-country show towns.
