.Now here's a short story of Lou, Who spent a whole day at the zoo. And while he was there, He met a fine pair, Of friendly and beautiful gnus. Next he went to the camel enclosure, Where one, made the following disclosure. Said, although feeling blue, He enjoyed chatting to Lou, With his bright and cheerful composure. He chatted with the camel, who was mad About the weather. It made him so sad. Then talked to a black bear, Who said his life was fair. And thought his food was the best to be had! Next off to the elephants for their opinion. They had arrived from the African Dominion. As they ate their hay, One was heard to say, "This Toronto Zoo is one in a million!" Much heartened by this good report, He spoke to a seal. A good sport. Who splashed and swam While eating the odd clam, Who said "My food never runs short!" Then he met a herd of large rhinos. Some black, some white and some albinos. Who charged to the fence, But they made no sense, For he'd never spoken before to a rhino! So he came to the ostrich pavilion. Where the poor bird, was sunk in oblivion. He had buried his head in sand, So it was hard to understand Even if he did have an opinion. Now sauntering along the path, He came across a wise giraffe. Who stated that up where, His head was, in the air. There was such a terrible draught! So Lou continued to linger and chat, While he exchanged views about this and that! Some were so impressed by his manner, They thought he was the zoo's new planner Others thought he might be a diplomat! When he stopped by the alligator compound, There were quite a few of them to be found. Some were basking in the warm mud When one said "if it please you m'lud" "Please don't spend too much time hanging around!" "For we are hungry, and we've not been fed!" At least, that's what a ferocious one said. Thought Lou looked rather good to eat! But could have used a bit more meat! Even so, would be nice between slices of bread! So off on his travels once more went Lou, On his interesting trip to the zoo. The many birds were next on his list, One, a parrot, sat on his wrist; Asked him who he was, and how did he do? Then a hummingbird asked for Hector. That's the name of the zoo's Director. He'd promised to find Them a different kind Of orange flavoured, honey sweet nectar! So Lou went to look for the boss, Which turned out to be a dead loss. For although Hector had tried. His success had been denied. Which left the poor hummingbird cross! Then lions, tigers, leopards - oh a whole bunch Of big cats, were sitting having their lunch.! Now Lou being polite and discrete And being hungry, wanting to eat, Thought he would sit for a while and have brunch. Now there are animals not mentioned here. To tell of everyone would take a year! But Lou met them all, Short, fat, thin and tall For most of them, his short visit brought cheer. But before I continue this report, As I promised to keep this zoo tale short! I will end it now, By telling you how, All the animals found Lou a good sport! For what I forgot to mention to you, Is the honoured name and title of Lou. It's no surprise he could talk, To animals on his walk! For his name is Doolittle! Doctor Lou! Rhymer. February 16th, 2018
