Poem
Greys, Part V Time was, when reason was not our King, And grey was the color only of the morning's mist. We beat the drum and danced close Around our fires, warding off the dark We danced and offered ourselves To this world that bore us, The cries in our hearts And the bright shapes of our dreams Not in search of any reward, Nor to pay any debt, Nor even to save ourselves from the Terrors, The Terrorsthat breathed at our backs In the dark. Not even for this did we dance, without reason - We did so because we felt it was Right. But now we are grown, Earth's final children have grown And enslaved their Mother: She is old and strong and will in the end survive us, But will She ever call to us again, As in the Time Before - The Dancing Time, when feeling ruled, not Reason? She will, I thihk - if we look with a mute appeal - Call to us As in the Time Before The Dancing Time, when feeling ruled, not Reason? She will, I think - if we can look with a mute appeal Into the Silent Center The dark and still spaces Where the answers live With no words to diminish thenm The greatest questions have the simplest answerws But those simplest answers are not best expressed in words She will reclaim Her children When they reclaim their Spirit When they listen to the voices in the rain When they accept the grey that fills their thoughts When they realize they were made not to know The Inner Heart of Everything But were born to search And in their searching after Truth, To find their basic value as living beings To hear the breath of the Ghost in the Machine.
