Poem
My heart aches seeing my little girl in such pain. The accident happened so fast, it’s such a blur. The doctors say there was so much damage to the brain, But I know they’re doing everything they can to save her. I’m stuck in a room with empty chairs and blank walls Praying that my baby makes it out of this alright. I’m going crazy as I pace up and down the halls Wondering what went so horribly wrong tonight. As my anger and guilt build up inside of me, The nurse asks me something I never thought I’d hear. She wants me to donate my daughter’s organs quickly, But this only confirms any mother’s worst fear. I yell at the nurse for asking me such a thing, But in my heart, I know it’s the right thing to do. Could you make that decision while your child is dying? You never really know, but someday it could be you. I wish I had more time to think, but it can’t wait. I have to sign the release while she’s still alive. Things happen for a reason and I do believe in fate. My baby’s organs may help another child survive. In another hospital in a city far away, Lies a little girl whose life hangs in the balance. My daughter’s heart is flown to her the next day. The surgery goes well, and right away, she’s conscious. It’s been twelve years since my little girl’s passed away, But not a day goes by that I don’t talk to her. I hope to meet the little girl she saved someday, But, if not, we will still be connected forever. People will come and go so that others may survive, And the pain of losing a child will never fade. But it’s a comfort to know that someone is alive Because of the little person that you once made.
