Poem
This is to my daughter, who has yet to be conceived. I will love you as I have never loved another. I make this promise now, from you I will never leave. I will always be there for both you and your mother. From the moment you are born, you will melt my heart. It will be impossible to contain my feelings. I will compare your beauty to the great works of art. You will be my own little Sistine Chapel ceiling. I can only imagine the things you will teach me, Like how to be your friend and still be your dad. No matter where I am, my time will always be free. I will always listen, whether you’re happy or sad. When you go to school, I’ll never be far away. At home, I can help you with your history and math. I will tuck you in at the end of every day, Only after you’ve brushed your teeth and taken a bath. During the summer, you may want to play softball, Or take swimming lessons at the local city pool. No matter the events, I’ll be there for them all. I’ll try not to embarrass you, as dads can be so uncool. Whether a football game or dance in junior high, I’ll be there to drive you and all of friends. Whenever you need a shoulder on which to cry, I’ll never disappoint you; on me you can depend. When you get to high school and boys are your concern, I will protect you from the ones that are no good. Womanly things, from your mother you will have to learn. I will leave those to her, as a smart father should. I'll be at every track meet cheering you on. Whether you win or lose, you'll never let me down. A phone call away, don't hesitate if something's wrong. When you stay at a friend's, I'll be just across town. I’ll be in the front row on the day you graduate, Watching with tearing eyes and feeling so proud. I know college is next, but I wish it could wait. I may not be ready to send you off with the crowd. When you’re finished with school and have your degree, There will be nothing in the world that you can’t do. You’ll start a life of your own and may not need me, But you will always have a father who loves you. Someday, you’ll find the perfect man for you to marry And I will accept him as my son for the rest of my life. I’ll be by your side down the aisle, so don’t you worry. I know you’ll be nervous, but you’ll be a wonderful wife. When you have children of your own and need a hand, I want you to know that I will be there right away. As they grow older, I hope that you’ll understand The love of family is what gets us through each day. I won’t live forever as a man on this Earth. The time will come when I will have to go away. I hope that I will have given you a path from birth Like the one that my parents paved for me every day.
