Poem
Oh, my Dear Little One ... Sleep, and sleep soundly ... Dream of the wispy realms, Where the stars dance and spin, For the morrow shall bring much change. Such horror we have left behind ... Such a long, arduous journey lays ahead, But now, now you are safe within my firm embrace ... There is naught shall harm but a strand of your tresses, So long as I hold you here, cared for and careful, Quiet and calm within the favor of my gaze. Your family may be gone, lost to evil ... You may be but a child of humans - Creatures who carry the fire sticks, Who have brought such terror and death to my kind, But you offered your life for mine, And I shall not fail you, Little One! I have seen more courage and ire In the depths of your little blue eyes, Than in ten of my kind OR yours, All for MY sake, All to confound and deflect Those who would have kept me forever within the bars. But you freed me ... You stood up to take the spear for me When they came to end my time, And I owe you the Life Debt ... But much more than that, This journey has shown me the breadth Of your kindness and wisdom, Far beyond your years, And far beyond my understanding or station. Yes, Dear Little One, sleep deeply and dream! There may be more tragedy ahead, But for now I shall insure the sweet meanderings of your slumber, And send to your thoughts the joys of my kind ... The breath of the jungle in spring! The span of the plains when the rains bring sweet water! The trickle of the streams when they swell with sustenance! The cool, quiet depths of the lake when the days are long and hot! The expanse of the heavens in the cold of the short time! The springy cool of the highland mosses beneath my pads as I run! The mischief of the cubs when they come to play! And even the joy of the hunt ... Yes, even that wondrous thrill I would send to your dreams ... For there is nothing sweeter to my kind, Or more dear to the essence of all in the wild, Especially under a swollen August moon, When the sounds of the deep forest call to my being! All these wonders I send to your dreams, Little One, To those wondrous, wispy realms, That you may awake with a smile, And the glow of the morning in your heart, And the hopes of good fortune to let soar your spirits! Whatever may lay ahead, I shall give you that ... You are my purpose now, always ... Sleep, and sleep soundly ... Oh, my Dear Little One! ~ 1st Place ~ in the "Image Me A Poem" Poetry Contest, Mystic Rose, Judge & Sponsor.
