Poem
The Inn of My Heart is a lovely place where I go to restore my soul. In leisure moments I walk its halls and visit all who dwell therein. It seems every room is open to me; every corner is known; and I am ever at home and safe within its sheltering walls. Though I've dwelt here many years and know as I am known, sometimes I find surprises as I wander through my Inn. Just the other day I had spent a peaceful hour gazing on a beautiful scene through a window to the West. When the time came to journey home I looked both right and left, then chose the course less known to me and started on my way. At first the light was bright and warm, but soon I noticed a chill; it became hard to see my way through the dim and dusky halls. Then ahead I saw a glimmer of light dancing just out of my view, so I picked up my pace and hurried along, sure I was almost home. But all that was there was an open door, one I did not know. So I walked up closer and looked inside, and my breath caught in my throat. Jewel-like fragments were strewn all about Like a puzzle spilt out of a box Waiting for someone to put together whatever this once had been. It was the strangest thing to see those pieces scattered there; they were familiar, yet so alien, with a beauty all their own. I reached out my hand, curious to know their nature. The next moment I snatched it back; one touch was all it took. Here was the remnant of Her. Beguiling and bewitching, she was beckoning me to bring to life a past I thought was dead. Too many years I lived as Her wearing Her mantle as though she were me while somewhere in this Inn of mine, displayed in silent solitude, had been the rejected forgotten essence of me. I stood there in fascination, and though I knew I should flee, I moved closer... But then, loud and clear, I heard a voice within, "Resurrect Her if you will, wear her smiles, her pleasant brow, be polite and even-tempered; never ask for what you want. But remember what I tell you; I know of what I speak. For every smile that covers pain, every silent deed of unwanted kindness, for giving and never being given, for love offered into a void, you'll pay a terrible price. Don't bring Her to life! Don't gather the pieces. Let them lie there - forever forgotten." I hesitated no longer by those beautiful terrible pieces, then as I locked the door and walked away I heard a strange soft sound. I can't be sure, but I think it was a sigh of relief from beautiful Her, forever behind the locked door.
