Poem

At this time in my life 
I am sure of nothing
I earn zilch in the town of nothingville 
but still have to pay taxes

I cannot forget the horror
Of that weekend
But for my own sanity I must relate 
to whomever dares to listen  

At last count thousands of sparrows dropped from the sky
Bees and squirrels vanished, too
No one knows where they went,
But I would have given my eyetooth
To have gone with them

It was the year the ravenous rats overran our city
the president came to give a speech
but in the middle of it, the rats ate him too
I guess they didn’t like his speech either

In the ensuing years, other varmints proliferated
hills of trash grew into mountains 
the people cried and screamed at politicians
but they were out golfing with the president at Mar a Lago

Trash built up in country clubs, cities, states and country
and pretty soon there was no place to put it all
the seas and oceans became polluted
drinking water became scarce but profits were high
politicians, can't so with them can't do without them

As I said, I am a nothing entity just a working American 
not sure of anything, I can't change politicians' characters, 
or have them do the benevolent thing for citizens
but one thing I know for sure
I still have to pay my taxes.
