Poem
In no particular order England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland But together Great Britain I have never been to Scotland. Wales or Northern Ireland as well. That’s because I’m getting old. And I’m not well, I’m ill. Yet what I see of Scotland. And the people there. I sometimes wish I really do. That I was born up there. I know you’ve towns, cities too. But nought can compete with the view. Of countryside, oh so bleak! And rugged coast of which I’d like to peek United with the Welsh and us We are so Great a Britain thus. With Northern Ireland of course in with us. Why separate and make a fuss. They should be none of you and us. We fought together with no fuss. Side-by-side good people too. There was no sign of us, them or you. United in sport we lead the field. Separate down the medals we yield. United though we are almost the best. Separate we are down with all the rest. This leads me now here to recall! United we stand, divided we fall. Surely there are no more them and us. We bicker friendly, not much fuss. Rally to the flag we do. Mixed of red, white and blue. Each one’s flag is intertwined. Making this, Great Britain, of mine. So come on Scotland, don’t stay blue. Raise the standard, as you do. Keep the Queen, I’ve seen her true. Waved from her car at me it’s true. Bother, used the true word twice. As a poet that’s not nice. Another thing I do not like. Sometimes I worry that’s not right. To see us separate, It’s not good. Borders set in stone that stood. Between us high, in years gone by. Will we rebuild them high in the sky? Should we divide this country as was before? Burnish Shields and swords galore. Stand and fight, see the blood of men. Then pull those walls, down again. History we should learn by it. Lots of brave souls died in it. It is a small word, like us. Let’s keep together, no you them and us. Like or dislike, care not I. And although this entire world in madness be. Let this not happen here I say. Stay together, stay I pray. So we can go forth in the day. Side by side and show the world. We the British do not fight. Or kill our neighbours in the night. As our world, destroys and kills. Let Scots, Northern Irish, English and the Welsh. Set a standard for all to see. We live united, all do you see. This poem’s long. It has to end. But let’s not lose each other friends. Keep United, I’m sure then. We will police the world again. Show the world from our history. We learnt the lesson well you see. There is no room to fight and maim. United. Great Britain. Will stand again.
