Poem
The classroom door snapped shut. Students looked up from their work. In walked a teen with a red crew cut. I listened to the sound made by his boots on the floor, And watched as he strolled to the desk next to mine. Large quiet brown eyes piercing my heart's core. "Hi, my name is Tex. Anyone sitting here?" he whispered. I took the big warm hand he'd extended, My face turning a bright red as if suddenly blistered. His half grin sent a tingle up my spine. I watched him through the corner of my eye. This stranger had to be a sign. He was nothing like the other boys in my school. They were all boisterous and rude. Not him, he was serene and cool. Before the class had ended, I knew this was my forever, And I wondered if he felt it, too. There will be no one else for me, no never. "Would you like to go with me to the drive-in?" Tex finally said. He won my heart with his kiss that tasted of Juicy Fruit gum. Two years later in June, we were wed. Through the years, two sons were born. On a farm, our love for one another grew strong, Just as our sons grew as strong like the corn. We were living the American dream, our family of four. Very little money, but we had plenty, and never wanted for more. In the dead of winter, our little world was tainted. My forever love become horribly ill. "No!" I cried. This was not the life I had painted. For twenty-four years, he was my only. In the spring, he was taken from us, and our sons and I had to carry on, sad and lonely.
