Poem

Paper boats drifting down the slow flowing stream, 
his mind enchanted by a vivid daydream, 
of pirates and treasure and rum on the run, 
all the while holding tight, to the hand of his mum. 

At four years old he is brim full of cheer, 
hopping and skipping with no thoughts of fear, 
swashbuckling antics are all he can see, 
an extension of those he watched on tv. 

Such innocence is a great a delight for his mum, 
though she may have concerns in the years still to come, 
with so many pressures from all those around 
and worries how changes he sees will be bound 
to steal away some of the safe world he now knows, 
yes, parents must always be quick on their toes. 

As paper boats sink we replace them with ease, 
but it's so much harder to go on to please 
all of our children in the ways we might like, 
with presents ever bigger until that motorbike 
carries them off on a journey we hope, 
will be safe as houses for we know we won't cope 
with accidents or other harm that may come their way, 
though we all have to let go of their hands one fine day. 

But until that day dawns, we strive to give of our best 
and trust that our judgements will keep them safe in our nest, 
for as parents we learn this world has so many ways to scare, 
that when we were ourselves children, we were quite unaware.
