Poem
A whirl, a gust, and a thunderous boom commenced, Heartened by the latter soreness of silent night, Shackled through the chill blows above, A tempest, a storm, Threshing the world, Shaking the Prison of Plot, The waters of the Holy Spirit roared, And the Great Dragon shrieked at its tumult, Demons scampering to the far side walls, Clutching for the last of the dryness I arose from the depths of my aquatic bed And my mouth opened, To a light so penetrating, The dragon’s flaming eyes dimmed at the sight Cross eyed, Blinded, till she only met her gaze Helpless, face to face, he shrieked, Wings expanding and flapping The demons clawed at his feet He smashed them in panic Crashing his great muscles against the stones The grimy walls crackling with the moans of his minions They wriggled like worms away from their master Unfettered, crushed and confused There was an undulating fury in my heart A crucifying need to create A zealous need to express A suppressed roar waiting for its moment Silenced only by the righteous light The well flooded with the light, Till all water beheld was but burning incandescence The demons cried out in astonishment As their Dragon, forced, frenzied, Ascended the well His great claws clasped the walls, Smoke permeating through every pore of his being The Great Dragon’s snout scrunched at his own scent His eyes revealed he did not recognize his own odor He wreaked of hunger, surprise, and dread Yet something remotely fragrant within Clutched him stubbornly “Ascending Devil,” My voice rose, starkly soprano in pitch Sureness, brevity and righteousness Sustaining my vibrato, “Terrifying and trying, Trusting and defying, I compel you to receive these words Blind one, Writhing one Godless child of anarchy, Behold the Glory of the Lord God Of whom you do fear, The works made lively, The aroma spreading rightly, widely To all kingdoms, ravaged, destroyed, To all ends, that meet and connect, To every living thing, To every dying vanity, And to Death And to She A Spirit that lives in me, A Spirit that shaped every curve and arc of the universe, A Spirit that bore angels, thee and all, A Spirit that left you, A Spirit that greets you, A Spirit that lives in me, Forevermore!” My voice grew softer as the Spirit, Produced the gentlest wave to brush against his jagged spine “Can you see, oh Devil, That this is now who I am? You mourn me and scorn a woman long buried, You cry out to a wretch who is but lifeless One who cannot resurrect from her grave For once her eyes do open, She is but what you wish remains, Darkness… and nothing worse Married not to the light, Nor the night herself, For the stars have long disdained her begrimed being…” “ENOUGH!” The Great Dragon bellowed, Two voices shouting together in the Dragon’s throat, One agonized, the other violent, Repulsive, fistulous and frigid, hissing, Convulsing in the innard flames… “Tell me who you are.” “It takes everything I am to stand before you, In my full-fledged form We are wrecked without truth, Our belt, fastened about the waist, We are lost without righteousness, Our breastplate—brazen and unashamed We are soiled without peace, The soles of our feet adorned, Purified in the good news, where we stand We are doomed without faith, The shield that defends our cause And softens the unbearable blows We are empty without salvation, The helmet guarding the dauntless mind, The extraordinary reflections of the heart… And finally, We are soulless without the Spirit, Transparent, reachable, and iced The sword that shall pierce the fiercest… Without this Armor of God, I am nothing Ever with it, this I am.”
