Snakes alive a boa constrictor By Stanley Russell Harris The new mad author & A Poetry Soup Honourably Mentioned Poet I spend my days in a coil curled. Like a rope you could say. Never get my full-length stretched so. As there is no room in here you know. It’s quite hot, so I cannot complain. Like people do about the rain. Never get that wet in here. Far too hot, did you not hear? Then one day there was a crash. The glass in my prison did smash. As got so hot, one night. Serves my prison jailer right! So I slithered out that night. Weather really struck me cold. But I am Sid the snake I’m told. So guess I can take a bit of cold. Just as well I’ve been fed. I will last a whole week. So no one need from me fear. Until seven days pass, you hear? How lovely it is to be outside. At full stretch, now where can I hide? All the gardens look the same. Gosh, I feel wet, is that rain? Here is a shed raised off the ground. I think I’ll slither underneath. It’s nice and dark. I’ll be safe here. From the rain that’s falling, I fear. Not that I’m frightened of rain, I’m not. But nice to be sheltered from that lot. As now I can stretch out myself. I’m longer than that old tank. I think I’d better hide by day. Then at night I’ll slide away. Not as in a playground’s slide. But on my stomach, I must glide. I have no feet like people see. But they can’t slither just like me. I wonder if I’ll get away. And no more in that tank do stay. A week has passed, I’m feeling glum. Got no food in my tum! Better see what I can find. Now I’ve left that tank of mine. Ouch, my head is trapped. And my tail as well. This is not happening to me. I’ve been caught, Oh hell! Bother still I expect soon. I will now be fed. I am a boa constrictor. Remember what I said. So I guess everyone is frightened. Of me now instead. I was put into a basket. Could not get out, you see. I could just see through the gaps. Where they were taking me! But the gaps were far too small. To slither through you see. Oh! Not a glass tank in sight. But such a large open place I see. And look there is another snake. It looks the same as me. On second thoughts, she’s blushing. It must be because of me. I hope she will not chase me. As all I want is my tea. And here it is before me. So of to it, I slither free. Actually, it was a larger-than-life vivarium. For snakes to live in just like me. Where people pay to look at me! That money provides food for my tea. But I get to stare back at them for absolutely free.
