Poem
There were lamps behind my eyes Hidden for most of my life Yet your smile lit them up for the first time And gave me the strength To see through the deepest darkness I was a wandering minstrel Singing my songs for a careless dime You were a passing princess On your way to meet with your parole officer But you stopped and listened And gave me a heartfelt dime The streets are an urban jungle Filled with iron lions on the prowl Their guts heaving gratuitous growls And I was a deer among them A wanderer with no place to call home But still I wandered through the jungle Even if I was prey To find the owner of a heartfelt dime Yet all that time searching The lights in my eyes began to grow dim Until I heard a song From the confines of my mind Your body was coated in tattoos And your nose held a ring Your clothes were ripped and tattered But your smile was whole And when I sang along I noticed something strange Our voices matched In imperfect harmony This was no classic romantic novel And our out of sync singing Had us laughing But when I took your hand the laughing stopped For you were homeless Living on the kindness of passerby Yet the world was your home You told me with a smile A tear in your eye I dug into my pocket and handed her a coin A grimy, mud caked thing I told her I sang for a careless dime But hers was heartfelt And when her lips pressed to mine I finally felt whole And when I pulled back I wasn't the only one shining There were lamps behind your eyes Hidden for most of your life Yet my smile lit them up for the first time And gave you the strength To see through the deepest darkness
