Poem
He stood there where you stand! He shook me by the hand He told me about his plan To marry a beautiful woman He said he'd been away So many places, he'd almost lost his way Flying by night, flying by day What he was doing would pave the way To us all living a better way We sat and I just let him speak I'd never met anyone quite like him So polite and strong, charismatic and true It's not often you're in awe by what's in front of you! He asked me who I was with, what regiment did I serve in? I said the army for seven years back then He smiled and said that the army had had it rough I said all in all I suppose that's fair enough A coldness settled in the air He looked at the window but there was nothing there As he said goodbye to me He gave me this letter to pass on to Anne Marie I asked who she was and where she could be found He said beauty lives where beauty is found? I told this story to the landlord of the 'kings head inn' It's where I had met this man the previous evening The landlord said that he couldn't recall If that night I'd even been there at all? I told him I was staying there for a week That he had served me with many drinks I asked him if he knew of an Anne Marie That's when he looked at me so quizzically He said his grandmother had that name That she had worked there when bombs were dropping That she once told him of a man that she loved in the time of war And about how his grandad died bombing Germany many years before I was dumbfounded when he told me more That you were coming in person to ask me more You show me this picture of a man The same man I sat with who shook my hand! I can now give this letter to the woman he loved Anne Marie; I think this letter was written for you
