Poem
Written after re-reading the fable ‘the tortoise and the hare’ … I thought I would give the story a little updating! A racehorse and an old donkey challenged one another to a race ‘I’m sure to win’ said the racehorse with a smirk upon her face She said ‘Don’t bother lining up you stupid little ass You should stay in the pasture, munching on the grass’ The old donkey gave the racehorse a knowing look She’d met her sort before – one day she’ll write a book They lined up at the starting line; the starter read some rules The racehorse just ignored them saying ‘rules are just for fools’ So the racehorse shot off like a bullet being fired from a gun Determined to win the race she thought she’d have some fun Dashing far ahead of donkey she’d soon reach the winner’s sign Donkey was trotting slowly; she was lagging so very far behind Racehorse was so far in front she was convinced she’d win the race But if she’d listened to all the rules she wouldn’t soon fall from grace For the starter said that the last one past the post who would be the winner So donkey stopped to munch some grass, as she wanted to eat some dinner When donkey finally passed the finishing line she was really happy Racehorse was crestfallen to lose the race, and she got very snappy The moral of this story is first past the post doesn’t always win And if you are a sore loser you’ll just have to take it on the chin! 12~07~16
