Poem
As I stood there looking at the old wooden doorway, Thinking how long it could’ve been locked, Years concealed with overgrown weeds, Unnoticeable out of sight and locked tight, Somebody wanted this door keeping shut, Intriguing and for what reason. Was I curiously brave enough to find out? What were the hidden secrets behind this entrance? I started pulling some of the weeds away. Inscribed in very small faded letters, Enter at! Was the only thing visible, Did this mean at own risk, “I wondered,” I started looking for the key, That might solve the problem, If there is no key I cannot enter, There it was! Hidden in the undergrowth, I stood holding on to it and looking, Very heavy I thought, very old, My instinct was telling me to walk away, Leave the unknown hidden, “Go in,” Another thought said, as my mind battled, What kind of danger would be lurking there, Thoughts kept going through my mind very quickly, Who had owned the land and where did it lead, If I go missing who will know where I am, I haven’t told anybody, Anticipation as I put the key in the lock, It was very rusty but it turned, Slowly I opened it! Ok so far, I walked through the door it shut behind me, My thoughts were how would I get out, It was a beautiful well-kept garden, With a very big mansion house, I wondered what year I was in, When I looked at my clothes, I was dressed in a long elegant white gown, A lady rushed up to me “quickly” she said, She took me by the arm leading me into the house, Through into the room where lots of people were waiting, They all turned around and looked as I walked in, Then the music started, I was walked down the aisle, A handsome young man stood there looking at me, “No,” I thought I’m not her, I turned around and ran as fast as I could, Back through the house into the garden, Down the path to try and find the doorway out, It wasn’t there, I searched and searched, All the people came out of the house, An older man came up to me, Do not disgrace this family anymore go in and marry, Or you will be worthless to this family, Your head will be chopped off, I’m not your daughter but what choice do I have, I was married against my will and lived the life of, Lady Catherine, I often went looking for my doorway, Hoping one day I’d go back to my real life, With my real identity, And my own family Had I got what I deserved? I was living in a world that was not my own, Why did I enter that doorway that day? I’m trapped in the year fifteen hundred, I was twenty when I came through, I’m sixty now, I have grown to love the people here, And the man I married in some strange way, And with all my knowledge and experience, I feel that I have helped the people of this time, Each day I live, I believe it’s the day I shall return home, Was I dreaming about the door? Did it really exist? I often get confused, It seems so long ago , Was it a figment of my imagination? What is my real name? I spend a lot of time weeding the garden, Just in case I come across a strange looking door. 14/10/2016
