The Little Known History of the Cruller And It's Impact On Naval Warfare"

No mere pastry, the humble cruller...
As you will soon see...
But a remarkable item,
Most important to history...

It started on a Spanish Galleon
In the thirteenth century
An accidental occurrence,
On the deep blue sea

The ship's cook was a notorious drunk,
No one wanted to eat his food, it stunk!
One day in a stupor, some bread he tried to make,
Mismixing all ingredients, it tasted more like cake,
But worst of all, he made 16 tons,
Fell asleep at the stove, and forgot his buns

Well they oozed, and they oozed, and they did drip,
Winding up about everywhere aboard that fateful ship
Lightly baking in the summer's heat,
These little round pastries too numerous to eat

El Capitano ordered them stored,
below in storage, away from the crew,
Until he could figure out just what to do...

As it so happened, this pastries aeration rate was so high,
It almost seemed like they wanted to fly...
Once in the hold, the ship rode high on the waves,
Acting as a ship intent to sail in the sky

This was soon forgotten, when an English Man-O'-War
Appeared on the horizon, intent on a score...
Roaring with cannons as it did near,
The Galleon, well holed, took water on fast,
The Captain and crew figured it could not long last

But as they fought back, at a time seemingly late,
They were surprised at their luck in avoiding that fate,
Seems the aerated crullers kept her afloat,
Saving their lives, and that of their boat.
