Poem

She grew up in a time when sitting
on grandma's lap was security.
Walking in a gentle night rain was purifying.

Sitting in the desk behind Johnny Garber
was being held in captivity.
Her first dress-up dance was being "Cinderella."

The first time staying awake at a
drive-in movie was "Giant."
Liz Taylor's eyes were shimmering night stars.

That first "after school" dance was Bobby Vinton,
Leslie Gore, The Kingsmen. Dancing with boys.
Walking home with Jimmy Grant was exhilarating.

Now a security system was needed for the house
as was a GPS in the Lexus. It was purifying
going to the spa twice a month.

Attending party fundraising dinners was
true captivity. She could watch Cinderella
by simply popping a DVD in the television.

The mortgage her daughter and son-in-law
had was "Giant." Yet her granddaughter's
eyes shimmered like night stars.

Nobody remembered "Blue Velvet" or
"It's My Party," but memories of those songs,
being young, and dancing were still light to her.

Outside, a gentle rain shower in early evening.
She called to her granddaughter picking her
umbrella from the glazed ceramic urn by the door.
Time for a walk in the rain.
