Poem

Blood was following his stumble
In the snow it was clear to see
The wound was deep and open
He must rest at one of next few trees

The pain was numbing his senses
He pushed cold snow onto the surface you see
He sat at the tree all humble
He knew it was the last place he'd be

The forest was white with snowfall
The birds were still singing in the trees
His unit had lost a comrade
The firefight had been intense constantly

He saw the snowflakes fall slowly
They landed near his feet 
He heard a cough and a stumble
A cry in a language he couldn't speak

He leaned forward to see where the noise was
To his amazement he saw a pair of eyes in the White Sea
Silence then fell so engulfing
As the men knew exactly what each could see

With a look of fear and then easing
The eyes glistened like jewels in the sea
A strange smile from the men behind the soldiers
Was acknowledged by both men resting on trees

No weapons, no uniforms, no countries
They were dying and mysteriously 
They both felt compassion watching the snowfall 
They hummed tunes and sang together in the snow under the trees

They died acknowledging a mysterious kinship
Not enemies, not soldiers, not killers 
now men helpless as helpless can be.
