RISE ABOVE IT CONTEST SPONSOR: BECCA TEAGEN "RISE ABOVE THE INFLUENCE" I held compassion for a very special friend with high hopes of being friends forever. First grade came and I met girl with long blonde hair, and skin so fair. Anna. We never parted and young lady-hood came and we shared everything. Graduation days then college and there we were, together still. I could've sworn it was God's will. Wedding bells rang and still...standing by each other’s sides. As we became adults we found out how much fun partying could be. The drinking, smoking, dancing with karaoke and unfortunately, me acting like an imbecile. Under the influence I became full of insolence. An alter ego with the highest degree of disregard for my life and others. Even through that time of my life, all I needed was one good friend. Someone to stay until the end. That’s all I ever needed. I begged and I pleaded. One cool day in April I lost her. She could no longer stand by my side when I needed her most. Even though I needed her badly, deep down I understood her reasons. We had been friends for many seasons. I was alone and covered in despair. I thought, “this isn't fair, friends since first grade, and Anna had to leave?” Her heart's soul I just couldn't retrieve. After hitting rock bottom, I pondered on my life. Who I hurt and who I had lost. Who I had damaged no matter the cost. After two years of being sober I realized how far I had come and how much I had grown as a woman who had been so forgotten. Illegitimately misbegotten. I called Anna hoping to make amends. For we had been the greatest of friends. She instantly said to me, “I can’t be friends again. I can’t handle the ups and downs.” But I needed her… Reflecting helped me. I realized it’s okay to lose people. I have moved on with my life. I have struggled through strife. I grasped the fact that because of my poor actions while under the influence, I was able to rise above with continuance, and change my life. I did it. I rose above the influence.
