Poem

Before Morning Mass

We enter with our granddaughter
carrying two Barbie dolls
“to their first mass,” she says.
While they work on her hairdo in back
I sit in soft light of this quiet space.
In a few minutes our son and his boys
will fill in the pew beside us.

How many times we have sat here
among these familiar faces:
the man with his larynx replaced,
the family with four young boys,
the pregnant woman and her mother,
girls with still wet hair, boys half awake,
and then the voiced faces of the choir.
The rhythm here so strong and clear
you can breathe to it.

Those two beautiful sisters before us
the one volunteers to help serve,
the other a young Mary spreads
her beatific smile to my grandson.
There is so much to pray for,
asking help, giving thanks,
this gentle talking through our self.
The organ starts; my wife takes my hand.
We are blessed to be here.
