Poem
You were supposed to be my salvation, The one on whom I always leaned You promised me the world on a platter Were those words imagined or dreamed? You know how much I loved you Though you hurt me and made me cry You manipulated my emotions often When you threatened to say goodbye I pleaded with you and begged you Not to walk out of my life I had an expectation that one day You would ask me to be your wife What changed with you, I wonder: Was it something that I did or said? I could drive myself insane some days Wondering what went on in your head Not anymore, I can tell you I’ve moved on now, you see. The day you walked out of my life Was the best thing to happen to me Now, I’m a whole new person Not the weakling you thought you knew I am stronger and more confident And I certainly don’t need you! You really thought I’d come a’running: Fall down on my hands and knees Plead with you will tears in my eyes; Forgiving and conciliatory Well, you got that one wrong, didn’t you? I’m not some lap-dog at your beck and call! What this actually goes to prove Is that you really didn’t know me at all! I was never who you thought I was I was always much better than that And now you’ve learned the hard way Now that I’ve left you flat I’ve got myself a new life, now With someone who really cares for me Who knows what love and respect means My life is what I dreamed it would be I’m treated as an equal, a partner In everything that we do I’m not considered a chattel The way I was with you I’m adored and loved and honoured Praised and teased for fun I laugh often and know that this time My real life truly has begun Where are you now, my ex-lover You sad, pathetic fool Do you regret the way you treated me Do you regret being so cruel? You could have had what I’ve got It could have been you and me But you could not see that, could you? You were never that visionary Well, here I am on top of the world: There you are, the dirt at my feet I’m not one who often gloats But this situation is oh so sweet! You thought you had me under your thumb That I could not function if you were not in control Just look at how things turned out Didn’t you score a massive own goal! Good luck to you and goodbye for good You mean nothing to me anymore Turn around and walk away right now And on the way out - close the door!
