Poem
Do I Know You? Do I know you? Yes, Mom, It’s me; your daughter! I thought you might like to go to breakfast. No, I Think you’re lost; Maybe my husband can help you find your mom. You’re in the wrong room, I know my daughters; you’re not one of them! Is your daughter coming to visit today? I think so, if she can. Would it be alright if I visit for a while, until she gets here? If you want too that would be fine but what about your mom, won’t she miss you? Not really, I think sometimes’ around this time she drifts off. Well; have a seat and tell me all about yourself. My mom lives here like you. Just as your daughters’ visit you; I visit my mom. Sometimes she doesn’t recognize me, her memory isn’t as good as it once was but I know deep inside she knows how much, “I love her”. I know, somewhere inside her mind her memories are tucked away for safe keeping and they will always be with her; as mine are with me. As I grew up I never strayed far from home, was always near my mom in heart and when we argued; I have no doubt, she knew I still loved her; as I do now! My mom and I are so much alike nothing could separate us for long, not even a disease that robs her memories. I am there inside tucked away and from time to time, even though she forgets, “who I am” her eyes’ tell me she knows this person sitting by her bed talking to her; is someone who cares and loves her! When I think she lost all memories of me to the deepest part of her and can’t bring them into focus any longer, she all of a sudden recognizes me. I never know when or if my mom will know me but I sit and talk to her hoping she will remember. That is really something and I hope she knows who you are when you see her again. I’m tired and need to rest now, I hope you don’t mind if I sleep! How long have you been here, why didn’t you wake me? I just arrived, don’t worry about it. Do you know who I am? What do you mean do I know who you are? Of course I do; you’re my daughter, aren’t you! Yes, you know me always asking silly questions. I was just wondering, if you wanted to go to lunch today? I met this nice lady, I can tell you about her; if you like! Debbie Knapp 11-10-2015
