Poem
Outside the city where the pomegranates grow, A girl fell through the ice of the village pond in January, And a green eyed boy saved her life. One February, A green eyed boy got mugged by a gang while I was sitting in the window of a building, And a girl who “No speak English” saved his life. One March, The green eyed boy and the girl who “No speak English” bought matching shoes, His said “ I hate” hers said “having rules” One April, The green eyed boy and the “Speak bit of English” girl got separated, And the boy kissed the girl at the harbor right before she left. One May, The green eyed boy tried to run away to his “I speak a good bit of English” girl, But the police made him go back home. One June, The “Please speak slow, I still learning English” girl started to write poems and letters to her green eyed boy, And the green eyed boy kept every one. One July, The “I’m not retarded, I speak English!” girl broke her leg, And the green eyed boy wrote to her that he felt more pain in his heart than she could ever feel in her leg. One August, The “If you laugh at my accent one more time, I’m gonna cut you a new one” girl called the green eyed boy from a payphone, And $3.00 was spent listening to the green eyed boy cry at the sound of her voice. One September, The “Please, please hire me!” girl called the green eyed boy every Saturday at 8 AM And they talked until an impatient person made her get off of the phone. One October, The “Let me talk to my damn boyfriend!” girl punched a tattooed teenager in the face, So she could talk to the green eyed boy only five minutes longer. One November, The green eyed boy promised the “I love you, I love you, I love you!” girl that he’d marry her someday, And the girl said she’d marry him. One December, three years later, The green eyed boy kept his promise, And the “Never go anywhere, that’s an order!” girl kept hers.
