Poem
Suffering and pain for our nation’s gain,
but no one recognizes what those before us went through
because in today’s self-centered society the only thing that matters is you.
They fought for their freedoms, rights, and happiness,
yet all some remember of them is madness.
People don’t appreciate those who made our nation great.
They don’t realize, without them, the things we would miss.


People like Locke and Montesquieu,
who helped our early nation through
with their thoughts that spoke volumes
we have systems such as separation of powers and the natural rights.
They are forgotten by many and were hated by all,
for at that time their ideas seemed to appall. 


The Constitution provided stability for our country.
Its Preamble promises domestic tranquility and the blessings of liberty.
This document is important to all, 
for these promises are ensured for not only us but our posterity.
Through us, the people, our country came about,
and we, the people, need to figure out
that change is possible and dreams can come true, 
as we have learned from those who came before me and you. 


The Constitution spoke of the government and limitations of their power,
but the Anti-Federalists were furious that individuals had no rights to empower.
With no rights,
 they feared that this new home of theirs would run into snares.
They protested and fought for they thought,
people must have freedoms and let their minds take flight.
In turn, you may thank these Anti-Federalists for the Bill of Rights.


The Bill of Rights consists of amendments
1, 2, 3 and more.
Many of these freedoms we share,
should be accredited to those who cared and made change happen.


Alice Paul, a suffragist set on the right for women to vote,
succeeded after discrimination and being tortured.
The right to vote,
such a privilege many take advantage of.
The 19th amendment was fought for by women with extreme determination
 like Alice Paul.
Remember them fondly and thank them all.


The 13th amendment is one to remember,
the abolishment of slavery happened in winter. 
Abraham Lincoln worked everyday of his presidency
and wouldn’t take no for an answer from the members of democracy.
Though he was killed in a theatre one day, 
we should remember what he did,
even though it caused dismay. 
He passed an amendment that abolished slavery in our nation once and for all, 
and for that he should be thanked for his contribution to the law.

Some others to remember are the 1st and the 8th.
With the 1st amendment, the freedoms of religion and speech are protected
along with the press and the right to peacefully assemble.
Last but not least is the right to petition the government in peace.
Many things some hold dear,
we don’t have to fear persecution,
with the freedoms protected by the 1st amendment in our nation.
We don’t have to dismay over cruel punishment,
or unusual sentences.
Thank goodness we are safe from pains such as these,
the 8th amendment also saves us from excessive fees.

As you leave and go on with your day,
always remember that change can be made.
Our country had to start somewhere and so do you.
Know what you set your mind to can come true.
Through the example of people long gone,
we can understand that you can’t go wrong.
In order to make change you must be the change,
don’t be afraid.
The impossible can be made.
