Poem
In the elm outside my window, roosts a mysterious bird. I listened as he squawked and fluttered. This is what I heard, "If God had given you wings, would you fly away with me?" To have wings and fly like a bird? What a gift that would be! He perched on the window sill when I raised it to climb out. "Your arms will turn into wings if you trust without a doubt." I closed my eyes in anticipation and flapped my little arms. My body started rising above the elm tree and then the farms. "Oh goodness!" I cried out to the bird, "I see so far and wide!" I soared on wings over fields, the mysterious bird at my side, and when we passed a flock of geese, they honked in surprise. What a spectacle I must seem to be, flying high up in the skies. "Watch out!" Too late did I see the reason for his warning, for right into a cloud I flew. It hadn't been there this morning. I was lost inside the cottony layers and couldn't see a thing, when suddenly I felt the gentle tap of the beautiful bird's wing. "This way. Follow me, and please tell me, what's your name." I told him it was Mamette, but all my friends just call me Mame. I asked his name because I didn't want to call him 'bird' all day. He flew around me in big circles before he told me it was Clay. Clay and I flew all around the coutryside, creating quite a stir. Sometimes we zoomed so high that everything became a blur. You should've seen the faces of people who stared in disbelief and I heard them shout at me, "That's Mame, oh good grief!" We landed for a moment, but only for Clay to catch a worm, he swallowed it and offered me one, but I could only squirm. Into the sky we rose again. I wish this day would last forever! I wanted to find a way to keep my wings, if I could be so clever. Clay started flying faster and I followed his route as best I could. "What's wrong?" I asked. He said the weather didn't look good. Dark clouds were moving in. I heard the roar of mighty thunder. "Let's find a place to land," he said, "a roof we can stay dry under." I was more than a little frightened of the lightning bolts that flashed, so I told him I wanted to go home and then away I quickly dashed. I spied my open window and flew in when raindrops began to fall. Clay was not behind me so I put my head out of the window to call. There he was, up in the elm, with a wing protecting another bird. He whistled at me, nodded his head, and this is what I heard. "Go back inside, dear little Mame. Don't you worry about me. We'll fly the skies again some day when you feel like being free."
