Poem
Mighty ocean, you roar with thunderous waves. My ears are keen to their wanton call Clamoring in repetition, "Come! Swim out with me." Temptation is strong in my soul but I can't ask my heart if it agrees. It's been torn in half and can't reply. I think it may be dying, dying a slow, agonizing death that leaves it and me in misery until we both perish from the pain. Breakers can wash away my tears, but they can't mend my wounded heart. I loved a man with a passion so deep, deeper then the ocean I look upon. Hear me waves that roar so loud, tell me if you know, Why did he do this to me? I gave him a heart that was whole and he left it torn in half. Can your salty brine cure me? Does it have the healing power to make it whole once more? Can you return it to its natural rhythm of two beats instead of one? Speak to me in the rush of each wave you send crashing upon the sand. I'll sit and wait to hear your answer. I've not the strength to move from your shore. Maybe I should heed your call and let you pull me in. Send your tide. Raise it high, high enough to drag me into the deep while I sleep. I'm too tired to think. Half a heart doesn't have the power to pump the flow of blood through my veins. Brain deprived of blood; heart deprived of love. Does nothing stop the flow of tears? Maybe sleep will help me accept my fate. Upon dawn rising ~ I feel warm water skim over my feet. Perhaps I slept for a while. There's whispering from the water that washes over me. I hear your wisdom in the lapping of your waves. Yes, it makes sense to me. Heartless man who hurt me so, you say I should pity him. "Half a heart is better than having no heart at all," the ocean whispered to me. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ December 29th 2015 Free verse contest Theme: Half a Heart Sponsor: Catie Lindsey
