Poem
"I want that one the chubby cute one." I said to the owner. I picked him up and smelled his doggy breath and kissed him. His name was Chief and he was finally mine. Going home in the car he started yelping wanting to be upfront with me. "Have patience Chief. We will get acquainted when we're home." I held him close and he and I were inseparable. He sat on my lap while I watched television. He would cry if I didn't let him sleep with me. I always gave in. Years later he grew to be 88 lbs. He was so handsome and smart. As I sat on the sofa he would still climb on me and I still held him like he was a puppy. We played ball. I threw him the ball but he always kept it. He did not like giving it up. It was ok with me I wanted him to be happy. He had an appetite. I would feed him five hamburgers. He still would want more. I would say Chief you had enough and he would give me his feel sorry for me look. I would have to give him one more. The love I had for him is beyond words to convey. Many years we shared together I always felt loved by him. He got ill and he had an operation that saved his life. I was devastated through the whole process. He managed to make it through. I was so happy. Several years went by and I had to take a trip to Northern California. Before I left, I gave him a hug and kiss. I told him I would see him when I got back. I was away for about a week when I got a call. "Hello Michael," crying she said. " I want you to say goodbye one last time to Chief. He is in terrible pain, and I'm sorry but I have to put him down." " I'm at the Dr's Office here is Chief." I went into shock when I heard those words. I felt close to death or what I imagined death to be like. I braced myself as the tears flowed and my heart broke... "Chief I love you Chief, daddy loves you! I miss you Chief. Chief, I will see you some day. I love you, Chief. Chief, I love you. Goodbye my Love! Goodbye Chief, I love YOU!!!!!!" I heard him crying when I started talking to him. He knew my voice. The pain I felt was cruel. The thought of Chief being put to death consumed my whole being . A piece of my heart died with him. It was one of the worst days of my life. That part of my heart Chief took with him that day and he will always have that piece because it belonged to him... Chief was a Golden Retriever. 12/26/2015 Broken Wings Contest Deep and Dark
