     The beauty of birds has always been my fascination. Oh, the haunting call of the
Loon and the devotion of nesting Robins.  Birds symbolize to me freedom. The
whimsy of their songs fill me with joy and wonder and I am captivated by the variety
of their many forms.  My Canada is blessed with rich bird habitats at our doorstep.
My wish is for future generations to hear the dawn song of the soaring gulls, and
the shrill of the pretty birds.  I pray these treasures will be here tomorrow. Oh, the
fluttering, undulating and gliding and the bird calls so lovely. Canada has forests,
and lowlands, tundra and lakes.  Our urban, suburban, farmland, parks, ravines and
harbours allow beautiful birds to exist and to thrive.

The Great Blue Heron
   standing motionless 
in shallow water    waiting
for a small fish to swim by
utters a croaking "frawnk frawnk"

Northern Harriers glide
    over marshes and meadows
bogs  and fields     uttering
their high pitched shrill "ke ke ke ke"

Whip-poor-wills love 
    the open woodlands
and the edge of green forests
these nocturnal     hunters
sing repeatedly "whip whip poor will"

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds
     found in gardens and parks
love to hover and     fly backwards
iridescent green with red throats
with squeaky clicks "chee dit chee dit"
