Durians As king Of Fruits When it is fruits season locally, everywhere there is an abundant display of all kinds of fruits… In any given location, you’ll be spoilt for choices given the wide selection of fruits… Of particular interest is the durian, a greenish thorny fruit that undoubtedly is the most popular… People of all races, typically Malaysians, they number by the tens, they are regulars… Every season seems to be to be a bumper season for this thorny seasonal fruit… So much so the going selling rate being offered is a lowly RM1 per fruit…. A typical durian fruit, has on its outside is a hard covering of formidable sharp thorns… Many a durian lover can attest to the inconvenience of its numerous prickly thorns…. When wrestled open, nestled within lies the heavenly aromatic manna called durian pips… Depending on the species, its texture, taste and aroma captivates from your first bite.. Most Caucasians recoil in disgust and horror, upon catching a whiff from this fruit and its pips… Little knowing the blissful satisfaction to be had in eating and savoring these fleshy pips.. Come durian season, all Malaysians stay united in this unique gastronomic activity… Being Asians, in durians the various races and ethnicities reveal their common ancestry….. It is a most common sight to see Asians by the roadside, haggling with the fruit vendors… Some are busy making their choices, shaking and juggling different fruits that they have sighted on…. A number of others are equally engrossed in savoring opened fruits there by the roadside… Some are eating seated at some rickety tables, others squatted in numbers are common sight… There are also numerous standing ones who are just as engrossed in savoring these fruits… While the fruit vendors are kept on their toes, heeding the avalanching demands of more fruits… Even in these modern days of health concerns like high blood pressure and high cholesterol… It is back to the good old days when it is a durian season, health concerns never mind at all…. For all Malaysians, be it Chinese, Malays, Indians, Kadazans, Ibans, you name them all… We all stand united, one in harmony and in spirit, for the love of this fruit, thorns and all… As one we lick off the last luscious bits from our fingers and finger tips, every savory bit…… Makes one wonder why this heavenly fruit is such awful poison to Caucasians in general….
