Poem
There was something the matter with Piet Everyone knew it Yet no one knew what Of course it took a genius to find out. When Doctor pressed a stethoscope to Piet’s small chest The room was filled with utter silence Piet was a smart little boy And remembered from biology class the importance of the heart “Why, it’s the most important muscle in the body Without it I am as good as dead!” And Doctor agreed So Piet went out on a mission to find a heart (For he was much to young to die) He saw an old man waiting for destiny to take its stand But the old man treasured his heart above all else And although Piet attempted to take it He was unsuccessful in his endeavor So Piet continued in his odyssey He saw a weak baby struggling for life “I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if I took his heart” But the baby claimed his heart was anchoring him to life It took one look at his mother’s gaze him to convince him to never give up Piet was now impressed “Having a heart seems to be more important than I thought” He sat on a bench and realized sadly If he didn’t have a heart That must make him dead A warm liquid began to glaze his eye (Yes, a tear) As that drop pooled, lining his lid Time started to slow down The drop began to trail down his cheek His hand immediately touched this foreign liquid And then time stopped all together And in the silence of things There was a thump. It was soft but it was there. Another thump. Piet pressed his hand to his chest It was there! A living creature. In the search for a heart Piet didn’t realize it was there the whole time It only needed some awakening.
