This piece was inspired by the idea of creating a piece in which each successive line contained one more letter than the previous one. 

I
Am
The
Best
Of men;
Honest
And true,
Faithful,
Loving and
Dependable.
Secrets left
Within my care
Remain, forever
Close to my heart.
Friends I made and
Those I have to find
Are the glue to which
My life is fully fixed.
My kith and kin; my bones,
Family, the air I breathe -
Give me such ‘raison d’etre’
That should tomorrow fail
To offer that gift to my life,
Then the best of me would pass
As the embers of the day gone by.
Useless and cold, shovelled away,
its warmth a memory, goodness lost
as yesterday, ne’er to be felt again.
OK, perhaps these are the ramblings  
Of one who’s lived longer than he will
- But by the time the kettle’s boiled dry
And your neck’s stiff from looking back -
It will be too late to make a new beginning,
Your promise to change the world has died
And your reasons to live have their dreams  
Which will not involve you in the slightest. 
And what then is the value of your good grace?
It is in the lives of those who wear the mantle
And declare – I am the best of men, honest and true.
