Poem
Pele shared her rage; passionate she boiled For her love feisty, my Ke aloha Sweet ocean, caress... pilialoha Massaging her beach, my waves gently toiled. Are you my niece, love? Young Vulcan’s sister? Answering, she said, “Come… E kipa mai! Who are you, Kahu? Tell me… be not shy. Neptune, god of sea, said I, and kissed her. Kamapua’a! Stay back… no, I say! Spewing fire, she spurned my advances kind So gently, gently, I touched her face, mind, But her heart was fire, unquenchable lei- Lani my brother’s, she must be my niece! Have you fled west, from Olympian mount? Haumea’s child you’ll not me surmount! I honoured her account, to keep the peace. You are of Na-maka-o-kaha’i! Her husband is passed, our quarrel should, too! I know her not, sweet, as the ocean’s blue! I know you I desire! Ask me not why. She quivered, then broke, then asked me again, In her voice, thunder, in her eyes, mother, She, land creator, began to stutter, Who are you, truly? Are you foe… or friend? Suitor, I am, and passionately ask Here in my waves, where love steamy rages, Share with me fire, inscribe my soul’s pages. May I, dear beauty, in your passion, bask? Akua akamai… Aloha Kai She softened, Would you love? Blaze? Ignite? Scorch? My love burns suitors… molten earth, my torch Or would you, Neptune, far from my shores fly? I chuckled, Beauty! You cannot harm me! Water does not burn, rather heals... with touch I see your pain, but I can teach you much! Then offered with grace my humility. The goddess and god, the water and fire, We offered each other a little death For life lived unbared had run out of breath We split continents with wanton desire Her passion cascade, in waves black and red She showered upon cerulean fleece For I had dressed in brilliance for release; Mariana’s depths, my passionate bed. The earth quaked in fear, mighty tsunami Warned mortals to flee! Intoxicated, Our passions extreme. I, Neptune, sated The capricious Pele, ma’alili. She simmers, now, the dormancy she braves That nani moana would trill her shore Sleepless, as crashing surf promises more Of passionate storms and amorous waves. 6-25-15
