Poem

Dry this humid late March air,
Grim and dreary stillness here;
Melancholy in sad fare,
Deep sense of loss loiters near.


The last of the Old Guards' gone,
Leading champion of our cause;
Death of an icon now dawns,
One who shaped our nation's course.


A man our people admired
For making Singapore great;
Devotion framed fond desire,
A leader who changed our fate.


No words or praise can describe
Your brand of world politics;
Yet we feel deep sense of pride
In this oasis dynamic.


We come and we go with ease,
Adjust to conscious affairs;
Live our daily lives in peace,
Where affluent hope floods air.


We started poor, down and out,
Lived in chronic slums of wood;
Now we live with affluent shouts,
See our children grow up good.


In one swift generation,
A pragmatic man achieved
A sure manifestation;
See purpose work sure belief.


Focus and dedication
Sculpted an ascendant moon;
Five stars forged brilliant action,
Each person reaping sure boon.


Resolve and work moved forward,
Fragrant flowers everywhere;
Upon the mire most awkward,
Look at how we climbed the stairs.


Yes you did your very best
So we might live life better;
Your legacy firms fine quest,
A poignant city splendour.


May angels guide your way there
To a heavenly delight;
We cherish those days you cared
With hard truths and sure insight.


Rest now in that greater light 
Where lovely bliss spreads easy;
We will surely miss the sight
Of your face most profoundly.
