Guess you should have seen it coming -
that I could not dance to anybody's tune
nor change my lifestyle just to meet 
any of your silly expectations.

Funny why you look so surprised
now that I am saying goodbye
for I don’t remember giving you 
any reasons that it was for real,
making clear that I didn't care
for unnecessary obligations.

What you saw was what you got;
I just took what you readily gave
with no promises being made; 
you were an angel and I'm thankful
for everything; but it has to be said 
that this old devil was just taking
what you were freely offering.

The truth of the matter is I did not ask you
for anything, not your time or your body;
you gave - and I took - when you sheltered  
me from the storm...but that's about all.
I may have used you but hey, you used me too.

I am who I am and I ain't changing anything,
not a bit, and even if I could it just won't work,
not my style; sorry if I made you think 
somehow that we have a future together,
or maybe it’s your naivete that was to blame;
the thing is I was really doing just fine 
but you happened to be around to fill my time
while passing through this part of your town.

I was born to roam, baby, so out to the highway I’ll go
with just a knapsack on my back and this old guitar;
I can't take extra baggage, duties or commitments 
as there’s nothing to my name except the clothes
that I am wearing and a bit of troubadour’s luck;
nothing ties me down, the wind is my only friend,
so off I'll hop again to the next station, whistling,
till I meet another one just like you, maybe. 

Goodbye now, baby blue, but just before I go
let me shake your hand for old time’s sake;
you’ll get over me and I'll just be a memory.
