Poem

I wanted to be an engineer
and drive a train insane
always with my chug-chug-chugging
and that four-note whistle
I carried in my dungarees
Whoooo - whhoooowhoooooooo 

I wanted to be a balloonist 'n'
look down on the Earth sun-kissed
and wear a fine coat and 
dark-brown top hat like
the wizard waving goodbye to 
his loyal subjects, that's that

I wanted to be a proud soldier 
of the good fight - that's right
the hard one that always opportunes
bravery wherever you may be
what's more, no blood or gore 

I wanted to be a scientist
who mouthed silent 'n' studied fish
scaling new heights of discovery
but couldn't spell Ichthyologist
so I gave upstream-swimmin' that dream

I wanted to be a man of means
not mean I mean, but not indentured
to the whims of modern Narcissus
or worse - his demanding missus
you know demeaning from other gender is 
a humiliation we prefer to surrender

I wanted to heal mankind’s afflictions
debilitating ones like physical addiction
fevers of the bodies mind and soul
chills that shiver us to lose control
but sometimes a man's desires get oversold

'stead I became a bit-player in I.T. 
it seems, to here sit, loggin' time
sumptuousness seems a word too refined 
but can count digitally fingered bits
if anyone really wants to know the number, 
the score, what's more 
I'll give ya my own what-for
'bout what life means, no more
