Poem

On cold and stormy winter nights
while mom was counting sheep
Dad and I would snuggle tight
eyes fixed on fire, staring deep
He’d talk and laugh the night away
though sickened by the smell of smoke
cause fighting fires everyday
to him was just no joke

So when one day while on the job
dad was killed in a blaze
I declared war with angered heartthrob
and took my father’s place
I fought through smoke and fought through heat
kept high our family name
A vicious cycle in repeat
a moth drawn to a flame

Till one day I was called to fight
in a well known part of town
To my dismay, an horrendous site
my home was burning down
I never could  have conceived
the carnage underneath the smoke
My hard worked dreams that’s been achieved
the tears that made me choke

On one hand, almost human fire
who’d breathe in air and would engage…
…the other, with burning desire
who stood firm to control the rage
The seething fire took a stand
for all its oppressed brothers
Who lived then died at the hands
of my family’s smother

We scuffled on throughout the night
neither admitting to their fears
Until it yielded in the fight
quenched by blood, sweat and tears
And as I dropped onto my knees
I knew there’d be much more
When will this revolution cease?
The battle’s won, but is the war?
