Elevator Shaft By Kevin Robey April 9, 2013 Here he lies at the bottom of this elevator shaft This is where he fell and snapped his shaky back This fate is his and one that he truly deserved This is where the road bent and he swerved He cries knowing she’s surely better off now He didn’t save her, broke her faith, let her down Missed the jump, down this elevator shaft he fell His fingers slipped then his broken heart swelled He could have saved her from that fire Now they both are hosts to that funeral pyre Instead he passed by that heated room Jumped for himself to that cold, dark tomb He never made it, never saved himself Selfish life that he lived for nobody else Thinking now, choking on the dying air About the girl he loved with auburn hair Never again will he grip her steady hand Wiping away the lines she drew in sand Never again will they redefine their lives Forgetting the sharp edges of their knives His pulse is slowing, there isn’t too much time His thoughts have stopped connecting in rhyme His bright world now faded slowly to black If he could do it again, he would change it back Before he set himself down this dark and selfish road Where he paid the price of this roller coaster overflow Up and down, he ended on the cold basement ground His heart finally gave out, and he died without a sound There he laid, dead at last She died too, almost as fast They are never going to save each other He simply fell and she was smothered
