Time By Kevin Robey April 7, 2013 When I was 19, where were you then? I was in the dark, burning in the flames Confused, lost in space, dead in a spin Rolled the dice like my life was a game I smoke, I drank, drove with it all in my brain I wanted to crash, going nowhere way too fast I never went to class, sliced open my veins My lifeboat had sunk; I was sailing at half mast I cried many nights alone with ink to paper These never ending alibis disguised the see-through lies My heart and soul dissipating in the vapor Burned me through till the blue came out of my eyes Colorless and alone, I felt confused and forsaken You saved me now, but where were you then? You were helpless like me, the gods mistaken It’s like we were paying for past lives full of sin You were 9, a child still with a gleam in your eye In a prison you had just begun to understand I couldn’t talk to you when you started to cry Give you the power to rise and take a stand You found solace in the world of make believe and art Discovering digital souls that took you away from it all People like you, under fire and severely confused By a home that cut you down when you grew too tall We journeyed together despite being a decade apart Separated by time and space then, we are lucky now Both children to worlds that gave us brand new hearts Breaking all the rules the demons would never allow We come to the present where you’re 19, and I’m 29 Veterans of frigid dark worlds that plagued our lives We stand in the clearing with your hand holding mine Feeling the same sun knowing that we both survived You have to see you’re stronger than I ever could be You made it here now, where we are finally together You’ve waited in this clearing for a year to set me free I’ve been waiting for 10 blinded by the foggy weather Although the sunshine won’t illuminate the broken roads ahead That will shake our foundation and test our unbreakable bond I will never let you go, even if I’m holding onto a single thread Instead, I will follow you into the darkness and further beyond Let’s hope for now that the sunshine spreads its ardent love And keeps the clouds from flooding and drowning our feet We can stop the demons from forming the storms above And find a place where our hearts can finally be complete
