Poem

The sponge of years has sucked me dry of youth
a million tears I've poured from pain untold
there's no reprieve for one who's long of tooth
contrary is the stage of getting old.

The dustcloth of my world is weighted by
grey burdens from too many years of dirt
no longer can I sweep to see the sky
collecting cobwebs, useless and inert.

The tides of youth no longer wait for me
that younger ship I was so long before
was washed away like sand along life's sea
to leave an old wreck keeling on the shore.

AS twilight fades into my cloudy eyes
releasing icy salt I share the pain
of one too many long and cold goodbyes
that will never hear hello from life again.
