Poem
The Easter Bunny is coming the kids shout with joy He’s bringing us eggs filled with chocolate and toys Before we can eat them we must hunt for them first They’re hidden in bushes, in trees and in dirt Our baskets are colorful our new shoes how pretty A new tie for his suit and my dress is quite frilly The egg hunt is today and right after church My excitement is mounting and I might actually burst Mom walks me to class and I kiss her goodbye I sit in my chair and something catches my eye There’s a large wooden cross at least ten feet tall In the front of the room held up by the wall The cross is empty my teacher started to say It’s empty because it’s the third final day What? Oh good grief! My head started to scream Let’s just hunt eggs before they turn green She talked about the cross and why Jesus had died For you and for me and why we’re alive Ok! Were my thoughts as I stared at my shoes Oh yeah, by the way, did I tell you they’re new She said this is the third day and we celebrate Jesus He was dead and arose and is right here with us He has holes in His hands, His feet, and His side But despite all His pain, He’s whole and alive Wait. I put thorns in His head and holes in His hands I beat Him so badly He could hardly stand? He hung on the cross and died in such pain But He rose the third day so eternal life I would gain? I thought to myself as I quietly hung my head I painted my eggs while Jesus lay dead Today is day three so yesterday was two Jesus lay sleeping while I bought new shoes I bought this cute dress all frilly and nice While He hung on the cross paying my price The egg hunt seemed small and insignificant now My eyes filled with tears and on my knees I did bow My dress doesn’t matter, my hair, nor my shoes Jesus I’m sorry I forgot about you I can’t thank you enough for your great sacrifice I love you for dying and saving my life You beat death and its grip and from the grave you arose It’s not all about eggs, new shoes and nice clothes I now understand all about the third day You came back for me and you came back to stay
