Poem

She closed her eyes
And took a breath
Would this be how
She'd meet her death

Awash upon
A liquid wave
Or could her life
Somehow be saved

She filled the glass
To full again
And raised a toast
To numb the pain

She put the vessel
To her lips
She took two gulps
And then two sips

She grimaced with
A tearing eye
Then blew hot breath
Through painful sigh

She sat there in
The TV's glow
She heard the words
From unknown show

It mattered not
She didn't care
She only sat
With vacant stare

Her face was numb
Her eyes were glazed
Her ears were deaf
Her brain was hazed

The next thing that
She recognized
Was sunlight from
The morning sky

The glass was spilled
Beside her chair
She saw it but
She didn't care

The bottle held
Three final sips
And so she put
It to her lips

It cleared the fog
And stopped the shakes
She told herself
"That's what it takes"

She staggered to
Her rubber knees
And stumbled off
To take a pee

Then standing there
In bathroom light
She saw a face
That gave her fright

With sagging eyes
And ragged hair
Her disbelief
Returned her stare

She placed her hands
Upon her cheeks
Rubbed up and down
And gave a shriek

"This can't be me!!"
She told herself
"I've placed my life
Upon a shelf"

Right there and then
She vowed to change
To look at life
And re-arrange

Today she lives
A different life
Alcohol free
And shining bright
