Poem
We came upon this island round about at dusk Not a single sign of life just a pile of old nut husks We thought we’d have a fire if those husks would burn But going through those coconuts, the trip took quite a turn For there within a coconut, we found a scribbled note Someone had once been here and this is what he wrote “Under the tropical moonlight on this deserted isle I had a lot of time to think and thinking made me smile I remember when we got here, just the two of us alone Nobody else to see us, no radio or phone We spent the night there on the beach Just outside the high tide’s reach But we didn’t anchor down the boat And sometime that night the boat took float We survived on what we brought And on the few old fish we caught The coconuts were pure delight We drank and ate them every night But as the days turned into weeks Our hunger grew to fever peaks Then as those weeks turned into months Our hungry bellies turned to grunts We knew we needed more to eat And both of us were craving meat It came to where it wasn’t wise To go to sleep and close your eyes It wasn’t long till her eyes closed And thus the fate that I then chose For there beneath the moonlit star I saw my wife as steak Tartare And could I take it one more night Along with coconut delight And so I wrote this letter here To tell you that I loved my dear” We quickly pulled up anchor and got back on our boat Knowing not just what he meant by the last line of that note Mdailey 3/10/12
