Poem
Haunted by memories too painful to keep. They taunt you while you’re awake, suffocating you when you sleep. Lost in a place that was once ‘Common Ground’ as vivid colors fade, they bleed into the echo of imaginary light and sound. Trapped between what was only make believe and what was never even real, Darkness watches you, and anticipates the taste of the soul he has come to steal. He calls out to you, as if to answer your desperate cries. You feel him, you know he is near. It’s so easy to surrender to Him all of your pain and fear. You go to him. He tells you that he can comfort your shattered mind. He tells you that he can give you what it is that you came to Him to find. You know now that you belong to Him and that you have left the world of the living behind. Your soul begins to struggle in silence; but, your soul is so tired, your heart is broken, your spirit is tattered and frayed. Your life has been devastated and your love has been betrayed. You plead silently for His mercy. You never really wanted to die. Only now does it all become so clear. You see now what was the truth and what were lies. You see the fine line that runs between love and hate. You see just how fragile the human mind is, and how easily it can break. You know now that you will never again have the choice to die, or feel the desire to live. There will be no more tomorrows to wake up to, no more hope to hold and no more love to give. You will never again see the light through open eyes; and, as the light fades, it takes with it a soul that never had a chance to live before it died. A spirit that will never laugh again, never again cry. Darkness takes what he has come for, so proudly claiming your soul as his most recent prize. Without a second thought of the life that didn’t have to end, but did, by his hand, without concern for the pain of a family that will never understand. Darkness knows no mercy, no compassion and he feeds from the tears you cry. In your time of sadness, he comes to you, hoping that you will believe in his beautiful lies. Loreen Parke
