Poem
As she stood in front of the mirror, sliding her hand slowly across the silken sheen covering her form, she hoped John was satisfied being married to her. A faint line appeared in the corner of the mirror. As she leaned closer it appeared red, as lip stick. Kleenex in hand she gently rubbed but it still lingered. She looked deep into the mirror and suddenly it dawned on her that her reflection was not there. Frightened she backed away and she was there. She was almost afraid to move closer again. However, she did and again the image dimmed and at close range, completely disappeared. Strangely she was more puzzled than scared, as if something was playing with her in friendship. The red marking started to move across the glass. Right to left, words, began to form a message. “Be thou true to thine own self first, before investing trust in John. Then love him more than thine own life.” She put her hand to the mirror. Finger tips touch finger tips as the mirror now fluid entices her in. Through endless halls she went, sensing presence. Soon there was only bright light from divine aura. She sat cross legged looking at what should be the floor. The thought emerged from nowhere but was real. “Whom do you love?” The voice came fluid, melodious. “You know all things, why do you punish me this way?” “I am giving you clarity of soul and memory. Do not confound my questions with human values of mind.” “I ask again. Whom do you love? First and last.” “I always have and always will love you first. My family, my unborn and my husband I love differently. “Myself, I love lastly; that is the way I was taught.” I know my dear. You were taught wrong. Heed me. Love yourself, first, last, and always, but love me more. By knowing yourself, and loving yourself, only then can you give of the full measure of your loving. Only then can you accomplish the things you wish as a person, aside from lover, wife, or mother. Go now. Enter into a new covenant with yourself. Begin to know yourself for the person you are. She awoke as the sun glittered through the blinds. John, long gone had placed a rose by her pillow. Recollecting the strange dream, she felt rested. For the first time in a long time she felt direction. Feeling the need to hear his voice, she dialed. Hello John, You know, I think I would like to go back to school for my PHD. I know you do darling and I love you too. We’ll talk when you get home.
