Poem

My nephew Richie finally took a bride
Down the aisle she did gracefully glide
Radiant was Erin standing by his side
But my sister-in-law just cried and cried
“Why?” I asked, as her tears I dried
My brother’s eyes too flowed like the tide

“This is our last one to wed,” Artie said
He seemed overcome by a sense of dread
“And now it is hard for us to look ahead
Richie helped us out, home projects he led
My back always hurts, he even pulled out our bed
He de-iced the stairs when it was dangerous to tread”

“Please wish him well,” I said, “as he leaves the nest,
For 30 years by his presence you’ve been blessed”
Artie smiled down and as you may have guessed
He pulled a white hanky from his tuxedo vest
“I have six children, and I do miss the rest
But Richie, you see, cared for us the best”

My brother, however, found a way to shake the blues
After the wedding, he and his wife took a cruise
Raising six kids had left his bank account bruised
He’d taken them to playgrounds, but trips he couldn’t choose
Now an empty nester, he had nothing more to lose
And finally he could afford a new pair of shoes
