Poem
Come with me now to far Knoxwood, or Canterbury Wild place, and find again the quiet grove and tree The bees in the lilac buzzing their antidote for misery And fancy brimmed like a honeycomb with its glee. Come there and wait for Maxine to come like a star Bringing joy, light, and beauty's eternal solace free When amidst the falling leaves I dream of time's car Bringing her back to me. I will only walk by the sea If I must leave my tree, and stand upon the scraggy cliff To see clouds become the art of heaven, and hear seas Moan like their heart is broken too for Maxine. I drift Oft in dreams where once she frolicked in the breeze. Come again and walk with me where the rain is soft Upon the grass, and taste delicious my favorite delight When in childhood and innocence I fled their oft To rid me of my fears and drink the wine of forest sight. The hills are house now, the bees are silent too The city has torn us apart, but Maxine I wait for you You hair full of the fever grass, your love once true And the sky a gallery of art, but cannot paint you. And the sea moans and moans with a broken heart And the winds search hills and valleys for you And I must away, away to my bending tree depart And wait, and wait while the wood doves call for you
